I need some help upgrading my lifetime sub Sony SVR3000. I've done a few upgrades in the past with success, but today's attempt to upgrade from a 120GB Seagate to a 400 GB Seagate (7200 RPM IDE) has been frustrating. My Sony SVR3000 is running 8.1a software, so based on what I've read on this board, running a 400 GB drive should be possible.
Here's how my upgrade went using the Weaknees boot CD with >127GB support and Hinsdale commands:
1st attempt:
Performed full backup w/data (including several shows) from 120GB drive (OLD HD) to 400 GB drvie (NEW HD). MFSinfo shows NEW HD as 120 hour Tivo and that it can be expanded 3 more times. When I attempted to expand the drive via MFSadd, it says that it can't due to partition/size limit (don't recall the exact message). Regardless, I plug the NEW HD into my tivo to test it out, and it boots fine, just it's only recognized as a 120 hours drive vs ~400 hour.
2nd attempt:
After reading up on the board, I try backing up my OLD HD to an image (sans recording to save space), then restore and expand the image to the NEW HD with the single mfsrestore command. MFSinfo showed the NEW HD as 386+ hour with 3 expansions left. When i plug the drive back into my Sony, it does the death spiral ("Powering up", "Almost There", "Green Screen of Death", "Powering up"....etc. over and over).
3rd attempt:
I then try backup the OLD HD again. Restored to NEW HD (without expanding). MFSinfo shows it as a 120GB with 3 expansions left. Plug drive into Sony, it boots up fine. Remove NEW HD, MFSadd expands it to 386 hour, replace into Sony and get the GSOD cycle again.
4th attempt:
Same as attempt #3 excepted used PTVupgrade boot CD to create image, restore, and expand. Same results as Attempt #3.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make this 400GB Seagate work in my Sony SVR300 TiVo? Am I missing out on something? I've previously upgraded my TiVo TDC540 to 300 hours without a problem many months ago, however this Sony upgrade is kicking my butt. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I'm thinking of breaking down and dropping $20 for an InstantCake upgrade CD, but want to exhaust my free options first before paying for a "possible" solution.
