Hi
I live in Spain and use a LT Tivo with my standard sky box and 1.3metre dish. Broadband is not available where I live, I access the internet via a 56k modem - I have a Spanish equivalent of a 0800 number for a fixed fee per month.
My tivo currently gets its guide data by dialing a Spanish UUNET POP phone number, this costs me money! Is it possible to change the username and password that tivo uses when it does its daily call to the username and password my isp has given me? Then I can change the dial prefix to the ´0800´ number I use for my unmetered access.
I have a turbonet card so can telnet to tivo to make changes. I know I could set up Internet connection sharing and use the turbonet card to make calls via my PC but this would rely on me remembering to do a daily call rather than having the tivo plugged in to the phone line and forgetting about it.
Many thanks
Pat

Well - a few years ago, many manufacturers made dialup routers, which would dial-on-demand to your ISP, and drop the call when there was no more data. The only manufacturer who still makes such a thing today, as far as I can see, is Cisco - and its £425!
Dabs have them listed (but not in stock)

You might be able to get one on eBay.
(Damn url censorship! http://tiny-url.com/2wcbrg take the dash out!)

I should also point out, you need the "serial" version, and you need to supply a modem. Don't get the ISDN version, it won't work (unless you can get ISDN!)
And if you can get ISDN, I bet Netgear still make a nice ISDN router at a reasonable price!

I don't think you can...
If you have the PC on all the time you can enable ICS (Internet connect sharing) and then the tivo would get the data via the PC, even though the PC is on dial up, with ICS you can initiate the call if data is required by your LAN (i.e. your Tivo) automatically.
Just a though.

thanks for the replies.
My PC is a company laptop and it travels about with me so its not always in the same building as the Tivo when it wants to do its daily call.
My plan originally was to use my shuttle SV-25 computer as a gateway with ICS for Tivo its small enough to hide behind the telly stand.. but when I unpacked it the PSU blew up and trying to get shuttle to sell me a PSU for it is proving to be a nightmare.. being sent in circles because its a discontinued model.
Unless anyone can think of a way to get tivo to send a username and password on dial up it looks like its ICS through the laptop and do the daily calls when I remember!

My Tivo got its data via ICS dial-up on my PC for months before I got broadband. You don't need to leave the PC on: just start the daily call once or twice a week via Tivoweb. More often isn't really necessary.
It worked fine for me.

The cheapest way of getting an internet router with a built-in modem is probably to find an old Apple Airport basestation. You should be able to pick up an old (802.11b) model for a few quid on eBay.

Going back to dialup routers - there is (was) a device called the Netopia R2121, which has dual 56K modems and acts as a Dial-on-demand router. They seem to go for $120 / £70 on eBay.
