My copy of Jeff Keegan's "Hacking Tivo" has also now arrived today from the nice people at www.betterworld.com in Misahawka, Indiana. And all for a grand total of £4.42 including post and packing delivered all the way from the USA. :)
The book is in pretty good condition (i.e. no torn or creased pages or scribbling anywhere) albeit that it clearly has been used a certain amount but not excessively. Most importantly of all it even comes complete with the CD sleeve and CD built in to the back cover of the book.
Seems very interesting in telling you not only how to write TCL modules but also about the intricacies of matters we are forbidden from discussing fully here such as MSFTP.
It also seems an awful lot cheaper than the current best new price of the book on Amazon of £21.99 and their current best used price of £17.88 from another US bookseller. I see the secondhand bookshop in Indiana had remaindered this copy down to 2USD from 20USD back on Feb 16th. I guess I was just lucky. Seems amazing one can get something like this shipped so cheaply all the way from the USA. And it doesn't even seem to have had to come by boat given only taking 10 days to arrive. Unless it was a fast boat of course?

Mine took about three weeks to arrive!
It is in mint condition - the CD hadn't even taken out of the back before, which tallies with what the seller told me (had to order a new one from the publisher). I thought it was out of print, though?
Took me two days to read cover to cover, and made me way more appreciative of those who went before us and I have extra respect for the LJs, TCMs, Portland Paws, BTUx9s, etc.
Going to read it again before I start digging around. I did notice that it vaguely mentioned where thumbs ratings are stored, Pete. :D

But will I ever get that thumbs backup module written before one of my two 21 month old hard drives fail on me? :(
My own copy of the Keegan epic has clearly been used but not abused and by definition anyone who ever sells their Keegan surely cannot be a true Tivo devotee? ;)
The book may be out of print but that does not mean to say that certain booksellers do not still have unsold brand new copies in stock. It just means booksellers cannot order replacement stock from the printers as and when all their current stock is sold.

We wait with bated breath!
Unfortunately the thumbs backup is quite hard, as it in effect means backing up the history of every series or movie you've ever recorded or thumbed. And even if you successfully do that (and that's potentially a lot of data) you'd have to do a lot of experimenting to be sure that TiVo recreates its preferences from the restored data.
