Hey everyone,

New to the world of TIVO. A friend gave me a Philips DSR 704 but he can't find the remote control for it.

Which remote control should I buy??? brands/ model #'s ???

a universal remote or a replacement tivo remote?

eBay seems to have tons of remotes, just wanted to ask for your WISDOM before making this choice.

P.S. I am looking for best functionality of the TIVO unit and don't really mind having more than 1 remote if i need to.

and P.S.S. Something under $50 please!

Thanks in advance,

Adam

Get a TiVo remote on Ebay - they can be found for around $17 with shipping.

If you have other components besides the TiVo and TV to control, I'd suggest a Harmony universal remote.

I have one of the two least expensive harmony remotes - the 520. The other is the 550 and they are extremely similar. It works great controling 3 TiVos, a DVD player, a VCR, an A/V receiver, and the TV to which these are all connected.

Although, if you don't need to control anything other than the unit and the TV, you're probably better off just getting a replacement TiVo peanut.

does the 520 have the thumbs down function?

They don't have dedicated buttons for thumbs, but you can make any button do what ever you want. For example, I have the Harmony 628 (low end model) and have two of the LCD labeled buttons assigned as thumbs.

I have a OneForAll URC-8910 I rather like. Although it doesn't have thumbs, I programmed them in, along with numerous other enhancements and upgrades with JP1. You don't need JP1 to program keys in though.
