I know that without a sub most of a Tivo's functionality is lost but having read all info I can find I sill have a question.
If you set up a tivo without a sub do you run guided set up as normal (ie Freeview box) and I realise that you will not get any guide data but do the channels show up correctly? Can you set manual recordings for a freeview channel and will the tivo change channels correctly?
I ask because i am considering buying a second tivo for the childrens room for the basic pause..buffer facilities and recording conflicts.

Yes, you can do entirely manual recordings and the channels still work.

You need to run guided setup as normal. Manual record works fine, Tivo will change channel on the Freeview box. I have been using an unsubbed Tivo for several years on Freeview with only one minor problem, the time of day clock drifts a little, mine looses about 5 minutes a year. You can re-align the clock by re-running guided setup, if it proves to be a problem.

Doing a Test Call resets the clock now I beleive.

Thanks for the prompt replies...
Now for cat / pidgeons -- should i consider buying a LT sub if I buy another Tivo, if its only for the occasional conflict and trick play....

On the subject of non-subscribed Tivos. I have a monthly sub'd unit with Turbonet card on a wired network. Could a second (preferably un-sub'd) Tivo be used to playback content from the 1st unit? It would obviously need its own Turbonet/cachecard - what other software would be required on each unit?
I am looking for a simple, family-friendly solution to playback content in a second room. Are there any other alternatives, which don't require the Tivo to be replaced by a MCE/GBPVR/etc ... machine.
TIA,
Dennis

I`m interested to hear you are using an un-subscribed unit wihtout problems - what software version is it ?
My one with 2.5.x has stopped allowing manual recordings due to no sucessful call to TiVo - do you leave your unit connected to the phone line to make a call to reset the clock ?

My Tivo is not connected to a phone line. Not too concerned about the clock, I just adjust manual record start/end times to suit. Software version is 2.5.5-01-1-023. I seem to remember years ago the Test Call used to correct the clock, and then it didn't (I believe a change was made)
