Moving a HD

I have 2 tivo units. One has an 80 gig and one with a 40 gig. I lost the 80 gig unit after a bad storm. I think it got the power supply. I have taken the 80 gig drive and put it in the 40 gig box but all I get is the message: Welcome. Powering up. Do you think I lost the drive or am I missing something?

Both Tivos need to be from the same model (540xxx, 240xxx, 649xxx etc.) in order to use a drive from one in another. If you have a 540xxx and a 240xxx, you can not swap drives. The recordings on one drive will never be accessible when used in a different S2 tivo. In order to get the drive to function in a different tivo, a 'clear & delete everything' needs to be done. This will wipe out all recordings and settings and leave you with a drive that needs to be put through the guided setup.
