I was going to use the PTVnet to make a new drive for my samsung directivo but could not figrure out if the software included all the software I needed, or if I needed the instantcake software or any other software. I am starting with a brand new 320gig hard drive.

For an Image restore you need Instantcake

Yes, I have both InstantCake and PTVNet so I could build up a new 250 GB DB35 for use in a DTiVo.

You need a different version of IC for each major type of TiVo you have. All mine are DSR704s, so one version if IC+PTVNet is all I needed.
