View Full Version : Tivo Recommendation for Globecast?

I'm a loyal Tivo user for about 4 years now and I'm always try to convince my family and friends to try Tivo whenever possible. I know how much they would love it once they try it.

My father has a subscription to Globecast, a satellite service that gets European channels and other foreign programming throughout the world. He would like to have a DVR for it so that he can stop constantly recording with a VCR. Now, I've done some research and found out that Globecast is not supported by Tivo (meaning it does not get the guide data). But I'm thinking that I can purchase a Toshiba or Pioneer Tivo that has Tivo Basic service or a Series 1 Tivo that can do manual recordings from ebay.

My question is what do I go with? Can someone recommend which model Tivo (Series 1, Toshiba SD-H400, Toshiba RS-TX20, Toshiba RS-TX60, Pioneer DVR-810H-S) I should buy?

Also, has anyone tried this with Globecast or any other satellite system not supported by Tivo? If so, how did you set this up?

Basically, my dad subscribes to only 1 channel, so I don't have to consider the problems of switching channels on the Globecast receiver. I'm thinking that I would have to pick a dummy service provider during guided setup and that when doing the manual recordings it will label the programs with the titles of the channel of the dummy provider (assuming I have Tivo Basic). Is my thinking correct?

Any help would be appreciated!

There are situations where Tivo will do a manual channel listing for you. I'm not sure if they would in this case. I don't even know if tribune would have data for the foreign channels.

I've searched everywhere for a Tivo setup with Globecast, but I have not really come up with anything substantial. I have found that people have setup Tivo with VCR services with unsupported satellite providers. I'm really looking for a recommendation and more detail from anyone that has successfully done this.

Get any of them, or even a non TiVo HDD based DVR/DVD/recorder.

TiVo does not support Globecast becasue their guide provider does not support Globecast.

Why bump it? - question is asked and answered - let it die.Because it put his post count above 5 so he could post links? I haven't encountered his link post yet, but I'm sure it must be out there. I agree it's an obnoxious way to do it.

OP asked if anyone had actually done this. I saw no reply where someone had actually done the manual method with TiVoBasic. The bump seemed like a way to hopefully catch the eye of someone who has actually done it.

But no lets rag on a new forum member instead for a simple

bump. ;)

This was very obviously an obnoxious bump purely to boost post count. Two bumps to get to 5, and a post with a link (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4994954#post4994954) all within a minute of each other???

Doing a bump within the thread you're interested in is one thing. This is not.

yah, and the link post is a real @sshat move as well. I withdraw my Simple bump and concede to your point of obnoxious bump

Well, I went ahead and bought the Toshiba RS-TX20 from eBay and figured out a way to hook it up to the Globecast receiver.

Since my dad only watches one of the channels, it was easy to just connect the RF out from the Globecast Receiver to the RF in to the Tivo using a coax cable. Directv had the guide information to the channel he watches, so I set the Tivo to receive Directv data. I eliminated all the channels except for that one channel in the "Channels I Receive" setup page.

Really, everything turned out great. Tivo Basic is running and my dad now records all his programs without a hitch. He can view the guide information for his Globecast channel and manually record anything he wants. He really doesn't need anything more than that.
