I just joined the TiVo community, and I searched several of the forums for advice on this subject... came up empty (I have a Series 2 TiVo).

I can make a wired USB connection to my new 400Gig, external HD, via my computer. I'd like to know what's the best way to copy TiVo programs to the external HD so that I can easily track these programs, like other video files on a HD.

Any advice would be appreciated; tnks in advance.

You would have to connect your PC to the Tivo and point the Tivo Desktop to your external hard drive that is connected to your PC. You cannot transfer directly from Tivo to External drive.

The OP asked for the best way. The Tivo Desktop software is several years behind other software written by Tivo users. Galleon comes to mind. The Galleon software has many basic features Tivo does not wish to include - like the abilty for your Tivo unit to recognize folders and sub-folders on your computer. In a word, Tivo Desktop is cripple-ware. Don't use it. It's a laughably bad product.

Umm, Atomike ... while YOU may prefer Galleon, for a quick-n-easy (even automated) file transfer (from the TiVo tot he PC) it is no better nor easier than Desktop.

And obewon86 - you can't use the TiVo's USB ports that way. Transfers only work over the network to authorized network PCs.

Fair enough. You are, indeed correct. To move one show and store it, they both work well. However, if you want to put more than one show on your computer, and then organize them, you're out of luck. Tivo's software simply cannot handle that amazingly complex task.
