View Full Version : Question about NPL screen...

First of all, if this is not the right forum to post this in, please let me know and I'll move it. It doesn't have that much to do with hacking, other than the fact that it happens on a zippered DTiVo. Here it goes...

I purchased a used DTiVo from eBay - Phillips DSR704, just like my first one. I had gotten the first one zippered successfully, and I thought I would love to have a second one. So I got it. The unit was not hacked (still had the warranty label on it, original HD. I know the label can be fake, but it seemed OK. Whatever...). The unit worked fine. I bought a larger hard drive - Seagate DB35, 80GB. I zippered it, used BTU's DST update (thank you, by the way :)), everything is good, worked fine. Not only that, but now my TiVo's see each other in NPL, I can transfer shows between the two - everything is swell.

Problem though on this new(er) DTiVo: when I go to NPL by pressing the List button on the remote, first time around everything shows up. If I move to another screen, and then I try to get back in NPL, the list shows empty, the selection bar is somewhere at the bottom but no recordings are displayed, sometimes part of the list is displayed, and any random combination of these options. I sometimes can't get out of it, I sometimes can. When I say I can't get out of it sometimes, I just mean that I press other buttons, nothing happens (and I hear that low-tone beep like TiVo thinks I'm trying to do something stupid :)), but eventually it will jump to live TV, or Guide or whatever else. It just seems that the unit responds with a huge delay, or not at all. This is how my first HD was acting when I decided to change it - it got a lot worse at the end though. This is only when I get to NPL screen - all other menu sequences work just fine.

Since I had to rezipper it quite a few times (this is how I learn what NOT to do), I had the chance to see this every time I installed the drive. Plus, I went through the same hacking process with my first one, and that one does not have this problem.

I thought it could be from the remote, so I used my other one. Same thing happens.

Its first HD did not have this problem. I know, because it came with a few recorded shows, and I watched a few before I replaced the HD. Everything was smooth sailing with the old drive.

Does it sound like a software/firmware problem? Could I have done something wrong during the process of hacking it? Does this sound like a HD issue? Or some other hardware problem? Also, can I just pull the HD from my first TiVo and put it in the second one to see if it's a HD issue? Does this even happen - like a bad new HD that allows everything else to work but navigating to and from NPL screen? I am baffled at this point.

Any help/ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

very common
you have a DNS problem
tivo can't resolve to a working DNS server so it hunts until it times out this causes the delay.
look at the troubleshooting section at http://www.thewallens.net/Zipperwiki for a solution

Wow - I never thought of that - thank you! The truth is that I experienced quite a few problems with the second router that is acting as an access point for the second TiVo. It is setup exactly like the first one, but I cannot access the internet from it. It is the reason why the zipper process would get hung up while trying to install gotomydvr (I had to skip it when I realized it wasn't doing it because the whole www access). I can access everything inside the LAN, but I can't reach the www from that router. Could this be the problem, therefore I need to work on the router? I had figured that as long as the TiVo's see each other and I can access them from inside the LAN, I don't have to bother with it accessing the internet.

Thank you for pointing this out. I am inclined to think that, until I get the router fixed, there's no point in me trying to mess with the files on the TiVo - does this sound right?

I was also wondering about the fact that, during zippering, when it is asking for IP's for the other TiVo's, the first one didn't get the IP of the second one, since I did not have it at the time. The second TiVo got the IP of the first TiVo just fine. This is not a problem, is it? Since the first TiVo does not have the problem with the NPL, I am leaning towards believing that the problem is with the router/access point. The first TiVo's router/access point can access the www just fine.

Thank you so much for this hint. I've been trying to see what the problem is with this second router, but Belkin has very poor technical support, and all my routers are Belkin. I always liked this brand, but this second router got me stumped. I don't even know where to go for help with setting up the second router as an access point. I'll keep trying...

ETA: it looks like it's fixed. I got the router to work - I forgot how these routers need to be power cycled in order to get the changes to stick. :) Once the main router "saw" this one, and once I could figure out the MAC address of the adapter and added it to the list of accepted addresses, the NPL works fine. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
