View Full Version : Why only realtime recording to external DVR?

As I understand it, Tivo has a hard drive. Why can't a Tivo recording be transferred all at once, like a computer file, instead of real-time? thank you for your time and (hopefully) interest.

You can -- to another Tivo DVR.

Obviously other DVRs don't know how to talk to Tivos.

because a different manufacturer of DVRs does not have the same file format so it can not be just a file copy and the other DVR needs to record it real time.

You can copy a file from one TiVo to another TiVo faster than real time and you can copy it to a PC a little bit slower but still better than real time

TiVos with built in DVD recorders can transfer much faster than real time since it is all one unit built to work together.

after the title of this thread was changed and the actual question posed was clairified, this post became moot.

And extenral DVR or DVD-R can only acceppt analog A/V, which by its nature, can only record in real time.

So the only way to transfer file to DVD disk, even with another TiVo, is by real-time? As I understand it, to transfer to a DVD disk just has to be done real-time, unless you transfer to computer then transfer computer file to disk? Thanks.

TiVos with DVD recorders in them don't even record on the hard drive in the same digital format as other TiVos do. They record in DVD format, even on the hard drive. This allows them to transfer to DVD at high speed. In that case, it doesn't take real time.

Other TiVos don't record in that format, so even if you transfer a show from a standard TiVo to a TiVo DVD recorder, it won't be able to burn that show to DVD. It's in the wrong format.

The only way to do a high speed disc off a standard TiVo (no DVD drive) is to use TiVo To Go and send it to a computer with a DVD burner, and use the computer to create the DVD off the recording. Even then, it'll have to convert the TiVo file to a format that can be burned to the DVD (and played on a DVD player).

Gastrof shows the correct method but realisticly it will still take a while to do this. Most people do this for archiving vs making a quick disc. Also they can edit the show to their liking once on the PC.

If you just want to make a quick DVD then getting a TiVo with a DVD burner in it is the way to go.
IF you wnat a DVD as the show ends then get a DVD recorder that can record the show direct to DVD.
