I recently purchased a used TCD230040 (AT&T, I believe) and when I opened it up, found a large block of Styrofoam inside it above the two large chips that have heat sink fins. My first guess is that this is some sort of air baffle designed to both reduce the volume of air inside the box (making turn-overs of air more frequent) and to direct the air flow in a particular pattern. Can anyone confirm this?
How different is this box (electronically) from the TCD24xx? I have a couple of the latter and neither has Styrofoam inside.

I've seen it in past tivo's
I chock it up to air flow also- increases the air changes and also directs flow right accross the surface of those heatsinks to move more air through the fins.

The 230s and 240s have the exact same mainboard.
One of the 240s I have around has the foam, which I guess involves getting airflow over the heatsinks.

I thought the 230's had a slightly different chipset with USB 1.1 instead of USB 2.0 which is on the 240.

Yes I think you're right.
