View Full Version : Comcast w/ Tivo - Questions

Hey,

Just got the 160GB Motolora 6416 III DVR from Comcast over the weekend. There are definitely some things I don't like about it such as no option for 'passthrough', the box freezing up occasionally and lots of ads on the guide. But the plus of not having to buy the box is definitely a huge positive for sticking with the Comcast box. Just a $9.99 monthly fee.

I had been looking at the Series 3 and that is definitely out of my price range...but I noticed that the Tivo Series 2 can be had for $50 after rebate up until 3/31.

I've never owned a Tivo before...but it sounds like they have a much better interface and are more upgradable & stable than the Comcast box.

Will the Tivo Series 2 work well with comcast cable? Anyone here have any experience making the switch from a Cable box to Tivo. Sounds like it only has one digital input so I'm guessing I would just have to get a splitter and run one cable to the cablecard in the tivo and one to the standard input?

Does the Series 2 record HDTV because I just got a new Plasma HDTV?

What are the main advantages of the Tivo?
And are there any disadvantages?

The series 2 TiVo DVRs do not do HD. You can only record one channel of digital at a time and this comes from the cable box being attached to the TiVo via analog cables and the cable box being tuned to the correct channel.

it does not sound like the Series 2 is the what you want. The series 3 can record two digital channels at same time via Cable Cards. That will suit your needs if not you wallet.


There is TiVo coming to Comcast as well atsome point. do a search in this forum on Comcast and check out the threads.
