View Full Version : Can I replace dead Humax DRT400 DVD Burner with standard DVD-ROM Drive?

My Humax Tivo DRT400 started an endless reboot yesterday, and per the advice here I unplugged the DVD drive and the system booted fine.

I know that there are only particular burners that will work because of firmware issues, but it seems as though a wider range of drives work for playback only.

I never really burn DVD's in this anyway, and I was wondering if anyone had luck with using any old DVD-ROM drive if I only wanted playback and not burning capability? I figure I could get a DVD-ROM drive for much cheaper than a burner, so I could at least get the playback capability.

Thanks for any help

I dunno, I wouldn't want to try it knowing I could probably get a compatible Pioneer burner for $30. how much could I really save?
