Okay so I stupidly sold my directtv with tivo a year and a half ago cause I was going out of country for 6 months and canceled my DirectTV service thinking that when I returned I could get hooked up with a new DirectTV with TIVO. Well as we all know I wound up with the Directtv with the sad inferior DVR.

Anyway - I want to buy a R10 or another DirectTV with Tivo off craiglist/ebay etc and I was wondering about connectivitiy with it. Do I definitely still need a home phone (I don't have one currently only cell)? I do have broadband wireless can I hook the DirectTV Tivo unit up to that? I see the WirelessG USB Adapter for sale. Are their DirectTV Tivo units/brands I should be looking for over others?

Will DirectTV have a problem with me activitating this box?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just added a Philips Directv/Tivo DSR6000 with no problems at all.

With Directv/Tivo units, I believe you need a Phone Line, for the simple fact, that is how Directv monitors PPV.

As for a WirelessG USB Adapter, all the USB ports on Directv units are inactive.

Look around for a R10. Others are the Sony Sat T60 and Philips DSR6000.

1. No, you do not need a phone line for an R10. It's only required during the initial Guided Setup, which you can perform from a friend/neighbor/work if you don't have a phone line at home. After that, it's only needed if you want to order PPV movies with your remote control (which you can do from DirecTV's web site).

2. Your R10 does not support internet or home network connectivity. But, as mentioned above, you don't really need it.

3. The R10 is the least "hackable" DirecTivo. Check out the "zipper thread" in the Tivo Underground Forum here for information about what you can do to modify some of the DirecTV/Tivo DVRs to enable features that DirecTV never provided.

4. You should not have any problems activating a used DVR. Just be sure to get the Receiver ID number from the seller to check that its account is paid up and that it has been properly deactivated. Otherwise you could have trouble activating it on your account. A reputable seller should not have any problems providing this information. You might also need to buy a new Access Card from DirecTV for ~$20.
