View Full Version : Never got 6.3c -- D* keeps calling and calling.....

A few weeks ago, D* downloaded 6.3b and completely fried my HR10-250 (you can read the saga here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=338379)). I ended up buying a new 750GB disk which I zippered and Enhanced using InstantCake with 6.3b.

Since then, the phone line has been unplugged -- I don't trust D* to touch my working Tivo. I was considering using The Slicer to install 6.3c to correct any DST issues. But, I have not received 6.3c:

TivoHD-TiVo# echo mls /SwSystem | tivosh
Directory of /SwSystem starting at ''

Name Type FsId Date Time Size
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
6.3a-01-2-357 tyDb 53870 09/25/06 07:41 772
6.3b-01-2-357 tyDb 104607 01/16/07 20:13 796
ACTIVE tyDb 104607 01/16/07 20:13 796
If I recall correctly, I used the Enhancement Script to set Update to False.

Question: Can I force the 6.3c download without plugging in the phone? If I plug in the phone, where does the Enhancement Script set the update flag (so I can double check the setting)? Am I correct in assuming that if I plug in the phone and force a call and if the update flag is set to false that I will get the 6.3c download but it will not be installed?

None of this is super critical because I do not use Manual Record. Not having 6.3c is not a big deal. I am more interested in a stable system than the right time for 3 weeks. So, am I better off ignoring the upgrade? Have others used The Slicer and is it a good way to back out of the 6.3c upgrade should it have issues?

Thanks

There are some threads around about using slicer and this upgrade.

BTW, your title is a bit misleading. It reads like DirecTV keeps calling you. :)

There are some threads around about using slicer and this upgrade.I did search and got ambiguous or no answers to my questions. Some people say never plug in a phone on a zippered D*Tivo. Some say it's ok if the "upgradesoftware=false" flag is set. Some say the 6.3c download is automatic even if no phone line is plugged in. Some say you have to disable the "upgradesoftware=false" flag. After reading through a bunch of threads, I still have no definitive answer in the case of a zippered drive.

Again, do I need to disable the "upgradesoftware=false" string, force a call and not let a reboot occur until I finish Slicing the drive? Or, is there another method? I'm thinking maybe disable the "upgradesoftware=false" string but leave the phone line unplugged.

Also, I could not find in which file the "upgradesoftware=false" string is written by the Zipper/Enhancement scripts.

Sometimes wading through all the posts here is like wading through mud in search of a single nugget of gold

Come to think of it, this whole thread should probably be in TiVo Community > Underground Playground > TiVo Underground. I just saw a new thread start up there with pretty much the same problem as mine... Moderator? A little help please.

BTW, your title is a bit misleading. It reads like DirecTV keeps calling you. :)Yes, they keep calling me over and over again... on my cell phone (my land line forwards to my cell). I got at least 6 calls from D* in the past week (because I've been ignoring them), presumably to remind me to plug a phone line into my HR10-250 (I listened to the last one which was a recorded message about DST and my unplugged Tivo).

Same here. They called 3 times saying I need to make sure my tivo is hooked to a phoneline. I didnt get the update, still on 6.3b w/ no slices. Time changed ok.

I'm still on 6.3b and it looks like my clock did change. I have my time zone/daylight savings time set to automatically detect from satellite. I don't have any manual recordings to compare.

I'd still like to know how to get slices in case there is ever another upgrade that does something :p
