I'm pretty new to Tivo and this machine I have. I only have the basic service right now.
The machine was working fine. I was able to change the recording quality settings as I choose. But now, even though I can select Medium quality, and I see the big yellow checkmark, and I click to enter it, it still records shows at Best quality. Any help?
Thanks

Okay, I'm not sure I understand. If you set up a recording or season pass for a future show you can select in the recording options the quality. If you are watching a show live and press record it will prompt you to either record in best keeping the buffer or change quality and lose the buffer. All the recorded material in the buffer is best quality, the TiVo is not able to go back in time and re-record at a different quality setting.
So you're kind of stuck with best quality, when you make an unplanned recording.

Chester.
Oh!
Thanks a lot. I didn't understand that was the default. I just tested it out based on what you said. If I hit "record" on a show in progress, it records in Best mode. But when I went to the guide and selected a show in the future, and hit record, it seems to be willing to do so in the Medium mode that I had set it for.
But it's odd. Since a few days ago, I realized that a particular channel was broadcasting a series of episodes of a show. I came in just after the beginning of the first show. From there I went into guide and started setting recordings for all the shows that were to follow. And the result is they are all recorded in Best mode. Even though all but the one currently on were future recordings. Humm?

You can set the default recording mode to something other than best. I set mine to high. Live TV, however will always be in best mode, you can't change that. So if you're just watching a show, then think hey I'd like this for later you can't change quality mid-show (just like to can't change from SP to EP while recording with your VCR). If it's a movie then you'll end up making two disks if you later save to DVD, which is not so great.....
