I have a Hughes DVR 40 that was not connected to a phone line for a long time. I got the nag screen each day but have now connected it to a phone line. The problem is that I have so many messages about the phone line in the message menu on the tivo that it is locking up my system. As soon as I attempt to enter the message area, the tivo locks up and the only solution has been to unplug the tivo unit. Any one have any solutions to this problem? I would like to delete all of the messages. The tivo works fine otherwise.
Would a clear and delete everything get rid of the messages. I would hate to have to set up the season passes again but I will do it if there is no other option. I have tried the other clear and delete options.

Such is what I've read in another message thread... but I didn't save the number to point you there
My general understanding is that the most severe clear&delete is similiar to a computer FORMAT command to wipe everything... except, of course, for the Tivo operating system that is in a special area of the hard drive

Yes, a CD&E will remove those messages. It will also wipe out your current recordings and settings.
Afterward, be sure to delete those messages every so often, or this will happen again.

Right, the Clear and Delete Everything is what you have to do to remove those messages. I'd watch all shows you want and then do this just before going to bed as it will take a long time to compete. Then, don't let the number of messages build up in the future. Delete them once a month or so.

Simpler solution: Don't go to the messages menu!

:) I've followed that solution for a while but I would like to be able to read notification like the software upgrade when received from DTV. I had forgot about this site for information. It rebooted and I did not know what had happened.
I did not realize the clear & delete would remove the recordings. I have some work to do to transfer some of the recordings.
Thank everyone for the assistance and I will remember to delete the messages every month if I remove the phone line.

I too have this problem. Hooked it up to get 6.2, now go into the messages to view the info about 6.2, and now I can't get in.
It freezes - perhaps I'll let it sit for 30 or so minutes and see what happens.
I don't have mine modified, so I'll have to watch the TV I have remaining.

Bummer. I hadn't connected for 850 days until I just did to get the update for DST.
Hope I don't have problems once I get the update.

Have a fix for the message locking R10 issue. After an hour with level 2 DTV tech last month, they indicated the R10 "Connect to DVR Service" gets rid of junk that causes the hard drive to back-up, and eventually corrupt. They indicated that if the R10 was not connected to a phone line for over a month, one would need to do multiple (10 or more), in a row, Connect to DVR Service calls to get rid of the back-up. I have 5 R10's, of which all were unplugged for a year. I tried one DVR Service call and it didn't let me access the messages, just locked the R10. After following their advice and doing over 10 calls on each R10, I was able to access the msg menu and delete all messages. Hope this helps. Also, if your R10 isn't connected to the phone line, or doesn't have the DST patch, you'll only be able to do one Connect to DVR service until the system restarts.

Thanks for the info Devaan22.
I have the same problem with my R10. I will have to string my phone line across the room again and try the 10x connection.
