Hello,
new to Linux and hacking/repairing Tivos. I am **fairly** computer savvy though. I think my HD in my Humax DRT400 went bad, but I was wondering if there is a way to check or possibly recover the drive. If I plug it into my PC (and unplug all of my windows drives) is there a utility that I can run to try to restore the drive ? If so, can someone post a link or instructions?

Also, I have tried searching the forum for MAKETIVOBOOTABLE, and have not been able to find it. I have an older 120GB drive laying around, but it was formatted for Windows XP. I was thinking about purchasing instantcake, but do I need to run Maketivobootable before running instantcake?

Thank you !!
Robert

Make TiVo Bootable is for fixing the boot sector on an otherwise working TiVo imaged drive that has beed "kissed" by Windows.

On a drive that has no working image installed, you need a drive image to install on the drive, which Instantcake is an option. You don't need to run MTB before, for the image restoring process writes the proper boot sector that MTB fixes.

SpinRite is another utility that can sometimes recover damaged Tivo drives.

Thanks for the help all ! I just purchased a 160GB Seagate drive and I think I am going to try instantcake. Looks like it is fairly straightforward.
