View Full Version : can't play some recordings after 3.5b

Hi there,

I just got 3.5b last night and now some recordings that played before in Now Showing will not play anymore. When I try to play them, I immediately get the delete or keep message. After picking keep, it goes to an error page that says:

ERROR

Error playing a recording.

The TIVO DVR was not able to record this program because there was no video signal on the channel.

Now, before the software upgrade, these programs played fine. Now a number of them have this issue. I cannot find a pattern in which programs will or will not play anymore. It's not just programs recorded prior to 3.5b - one of the programs I recorded tonight has the problem while the others didn't.

All this is occuring on a S1 DSR6000 that has been upgraded to about 350 hours. I think one drive is a 320GB and the other a 250GB. Honestly, it's been so long since I had any issues with this S1 that I can't remember the drives exactly.

I know that my video signal is not the problem because I wound up recording the same program on my HR10-250 with no signal issue.

Anyone else seeing this problem or have an idea about what to do?

Thanks,
--David

Did you re-install the LBA48 kernel after the update to 3.5b? If not, that could explain why you can't play recordings sitting on large drives...

Thanks for the reply.

I did not reinstall the LBA48 kernel. It looks like I can just use PTVupgrade's LBA48 Boot CD (4.04) to run copykern and install the 3.10+ kernel.

Two questions:

1. Do I have to increase my swap again when installing this new kernel (using the -s option in copykern)?

2. Assuming that installing the LBA48-aware kernel does not require a complete init of my hard drives, will I get access again to the recordings that gave me the error message after the 3.5b upgrade?

Thanks again!

Not 100% sure, but I would assume that the same swap partition would be used even when the TiVo software is upgraded.

The LBA48 kernel will sit in its own partition, so it doesn't require an init of your hard drives. Some of your recordings may have been corrupted though. From this post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4041412&&#post4041412):

As I can see from some of the posts here, there's a degree of 'randomness' when it comes to recovering using the updated LBA48 tools and based upon my own experience, my guess is that it is directly related to how long a > 137GB system remains in use after the 3.5 software is installed.

IE. We've done recertifications on a few systems that were shut off and sent to us immediately following the upgrade to 3.5 - in those cases, restoration of the kernel, and reinstallation of the networking hacks worked just fine. In a few other cases, we were unable to fully boot the unit after attempting to install the updated kernel and basic networking drivers.
