My R10 DVR is stuck on the message "Updating service update" due to the 6.2a upgrade. We've been without service for 3 days now and Directv says to buy a new system. Does anyone know a fix for this? We're desperate...help!

Have you unplugged the box? It seems like my R10 did the same thing.

FYI, for an R10 it would be the "V6.1a" upgrade - V6.1x is for R10s, all of the other SD S2 DTivos run "V6.2x".
Once you finally get the upgrade I don't want you to freak out when it says "V6.1a" and you think you went backwards.

I have unplugged the system and also reset it about 15 times. No luck. I think I am sunk.

Well, if nothing else works, I wouldn't buy a new system. Just replace the hard drive.
Actually, maybe you don't even have to replace the drive. Just burn a new image on it, but you will lose all recordings.

Ours did the same thing in March, DTV sent us an R15 and told us since we bought the R10 we did not need to return it as we would now be leasing the R15. Well the R15 sucked, then they billed me $200 for the R10 I did not return. after multiple calls and hours on the phone with DTV, we returned the R15 as it totally sucked (not TiVo). I now need to find out how to get this R10 out of the Upgrading mode that it is stuck in. Any help would be appreciated. :)

If installing hard drives doesn't scare you and you have a PC, then you can use Instacake ($20) Instacake (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/instantcake.cfm) to reinstall the Tivo software on your hard drive. Since you're opeining up your R10, now's probably a good time to upgrade the hard drive also. Fry's is selling a 400 GB Seagate PATA hard drive for $89.99. MFS Live MFS Live (http://www.mfslive.org/) will let you take full advantage of the increased recording space - about 370 hours.

Thanks Forrest,
I am just begining to understand the difference between an Instacake and an upgrade. I have dl'd the boot CD now I need to find the image, I am hesitant to pay for anything as I am not sure it will fix my problem. As we never had it more than 50% full I don't need to increase the hard drive at this point.
