This is my first TIVO. Just picked up a used HDRV2 on ebay. Had a bad drive, so i did the instantcake on a drive I had. ( had a hell of a time getting it to work with my dell...next one will be much easier :) ) Here's my stupid question. I haven't called to activate this receiver yet. I only have one line running in right now...(that'll be next weekend's project). I put the coax on tuner one and get the previews etc. If I switch the coax to tuner 2 I get nothing. Now does tuner 2 only kick in after tuner 1. Granted the purchase came with the wrong remote, so I'm using a rc23 for now...do you switch tuners with the remote? I just don't want to activate this one if it's nfg. My great deal didn't end up being as good of a buy as I thought, but I had planned on swapping the hard drive anyhow.
Thanks.

First, you need to run through the "guided setup" and tell it the type of dish that you have and how many inputs are connected... it's possible the previous owner only had one line connected.
If you only have one cable I can't recall if you can tell it you have two lines and it will continue with the setup or it will get miffed that you have input #2 with no signal and quit the setup. If you can convince it that you have two lines then you should be able to move the cable from input #1 to input #2 to verify tuner operation.
Once you have two lines run (from the dish or multiswitch - never use a splitter) then the standard "peanut remote" you can use the up/down arrows, or repeated pressings of the "Live TV" button (if you have a remote with that button in the upper left) will bounce you back and forth between tuners.
If you don't have the correct button(s) on your remote the up/down on the front panel of the box may do the trick... I'm at work right now and cannot test it on a live box.
Welcome to the world of DTivos - it will be worth your work once you have everything set up properly.

You must have One line coming into Tuner 1 for the unit to work. You can also have a second line coming into Tuner 2, for Dual Tuner functioning.
You cannot just run one Cable into Tuner 2.
During setup, there is a screen where it asks if you have both Tuner 1 and 2 connected, or just Tuner 1.

you guys are great...bought 100' of cable and ran it up the stairs from my basement sat. Did what wolflord suggested...and we're up and running....almost.
Called the directv csr and they said that they wouldn't activate this receiver because i presently don't have a tivo receiver activated. They are telling me that Directv will only activate their new units....this was a whole lot of work for nothing. Guess it's going back on ebay.
thanks

Huh? Call back again. There's no reason why DirecTV should not activate a DirecTV/Tivo DVR that you purchased from eBay, provided that it has a "clean" history (no unpaid balance, etc.).

yeah, DTV should activate it no problem.
And, I have been told that any "unpaid balances" only are tied to access cards, not RID's.
I wanted to be crystal clear about this so I asked two different csr's and got the same answer, as I just added another Tivo to the house.
DTV is getting revenue from you, regardless. Tell them to activate the receiver and don't take no for an answer. I assume you have a good access card for it?
If you haven't had a Tivo before, you will have to start paying the monthly DVR fee ($5.99/mo i believe). But that will encompass any number of DVR or Tivo units.... you pay one fee for the DVR service and thats it.

I'll try again. Anyone activate a tivo recently that didn't previously have tivo on their account. From what I understand, this has only been a recent change.
Thanks

Activated a Philips DSR6000 Directv/Tivo Unit Today that I purchased on EBay.
Had no problems at all. I removed my Standalone D11-100 Receiver, as it was a Lease, and even used the access Card out of it in the Philips.
As for the $5.99 a Month DVR Fee, forget it. With the Total Plus or Premier package the price is already included.
Phone Directv again and ask to speak to a Manager. They can and will set you up. If you have any problems let me know, and I will forward the email i received from them before I went ahead and purchased my unit.
