Hi Folks,

I have two HR10-250's and am pretty happy with them for the most part. I also have an HD receiver (no DVR) in the bedroom - I am wanting to put a DVR in the bedroom - whether or not it's a Tivo is not as big a concern as the cost.

What I'm wondering is, and I've done a search seem to be hitting a wall - Can I call up DTV and tell them I'd like to "upgrade" to a HR20-700 and just replace my HD receiver with it and still keep my HR10-250's? Can I do this at little or no cost?

What/who do I have to talk to and what do I have to say to get a cheap or free HR20-700 from DTV? I have 7 STBs in the house, and like I said two of them are HR10-250's and I've been a customer for I don't know how many years and I subscribe to NFL ticket and have all the channels except premium channels. I know a lot of people seem to be getting free "upgrades" to the HR20-700 without having to give up their HR10-250's - but I'm not clear on exactly how that is working. If someone could enlighten me, I'd really appreciate it.

If you own the hr10's then your fine. But if you are leasing them then I think they will want them back.

I own both units (purchased on Ebay about a year and a half ago).

Do I just call the 800#, say "cancel service" ... and then what?

I was leasing an HR10-250 which died, which I know is a bit different than your situation, but when they told me they were sending an HR20-700, they told me to "dispose" of my HR10-250 any way I saw fit....which, of course, means take the case off and fix it! ;-)

If all you want to do is replace the HD (non DVR) receiver with a HR20-700, I don't see why the the two HR10-250s would even be part of the conversation.

You would want to be certain to call the 800 retention number (search for it in the forum) as normal CSR's may not care how long you've been a customer. Tell them you'd like to add an HR20 to your system and start the negotiation. I paid $50 (after they billed the whole thing and credited it back) plus a small shipping charge.

Good luck!

Be careful though if you want to put the HR20 in your bedroom. In my opinion, it is louder than the Hr10. The disk drive clicking is very noticeable.

The installer was supposed to take mine but he didn't for whatever reason. The HR20 is pretty nice as long as it recirds I will be very happy with it.

Wow, that's good to know about it's noise level. I currently have a SA Tivo in the bedroom and have a WD drive in there, so it's pretty loud as well. I've been toying with the idea of putting it in the closet. I guess I could do the same with the HR20.

I don't suppose it has an RF remote, does it?

Yes, the remote works in either RF or IR mode.

Can I call up DTV and tell them I'd like to "upgrade" to a HR20-700 and just replace my HD receiver with it and still keep my HR10-250's? Can I do this at little or no cost?Do you already have the HD programming package?

If not, then activating a HD receiver might result in an extra $10/mo "HD Access Fee".

Edited: On second thought, your current programming might not matter... last month's rate change language was something like "[anyone activating a HD receiver after Feb 5, 2007 must pay an HD Access Fee of $10/mo]".

believe that the direct number to retention no longer exists, least that has been mentioned here and other places

That's interesting. I hadn't seen that, so I apologize for bad info.

Too bad if it's gone. It was very useful.

Be careful about putting it in an enclosed area. These things require good airflow around them - not recirculated air. If you feel you have to put it in an enclosure, make sure that there is always a fresh air supply it can draw in.

The retention department isnt gone just the direct phone number to it is. They were getting so many calls from people wanting free boxes that customers with true retention issues could not get through to them. The easiest way to get to retention is to call the 800 number and when the automated voice comes on say "cancel service" you will most likely be transferred right to them. If not you will have to go through the CSR's and be trensferred to them. Either way the department still exists. Good Luck,
Jim
