I have an HR10-250 running 6.3c-01-2-357 Firmware for my DirecTV.

My current setup is that I have an Analog Phone Line plugged into the back of it. I assume this is what the unit uses to dial out to get Firmware Updates. I am about to change my home phone setup, and have the following questions. Please try to answer all of them, as it may effect how I do things:

1) What is the Analog Line REALLY used for?

* Is it just for software updates?
* Is it for Pay-Per-View Access?
* Is it for getting Guide Updates for DirecTV, or is that handled through the dish?

2) If I hook up a CallVante/Vontage VOIP unit in the house, can that be used in place of the Analog line? Or will the unit have trouble dialing out of a VOIP network?

Bottom line is that I really need to get rid of that Analog line, and I'm seeing if I can retain all functionality by using the VOIP unit, or whether I really don't need that functionality at all.

The perfect world, of course, would be if this unit could accept updates from the Internet, but as I understand it, that code will be released for this unit when Hell freezes over. Only the standalone TiVos have that ability.

Thanks for your assistance!

Chuck

1. Pay-per-view reporting. Guide Data and software updates are downloaded directly from the satellites. You also need a phone call to trigger installation of updated software.

2. Maybe. Search here on "VOIP". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Nothing bad will happen with no analog phone line connected.
