I just purchased a HR10-250 and hooked it up called Dtv w/ the access card # etc , but when it went to reset itself I now get the error

Severe error leave plugged in to the phone line for 3 hours , don't restart or unplug

my question do I really have to follow this or can I just reset this thing and hope everything goes well

Dtv tech said that this is because its a new DVR and all DVR's have to go through this (which i don't remember happening when I purchased my Series 1 dtivo) I guess my biggest concern is losing any functionality from this device that hasn't been made for around a year

Is there a work around for this?

thanks

PS - I searched but didnt come up with anything

You might read/ask in the HR10-250 forum

tech is wrong. Not all DVR's do this. what's happening is, the unit is in a diagnostic mode, and will download new system software if it needs it. Sometimes the procedure works, but more often than not, the Hard Disk has bad sectors on it, and it will fail again.

You should look through the HDTiVo forum. However, the three hours is the minimum that yiou should wait. What it is doing is trying to repair itself by using the other OS partition since the current one has become corrupted. If you do a reboot, you'll just be delaying this operation. If it succeeds you'll have full functionality, but this is a symptom of a potential hard drive failure.

I think you are right since the severe error is a more general error that most of us have experienced at one time or another with HD or nonHD Directivos.

I think they are suggesting that if a question is specific to the HR10-250, it would be better addressed in the DirecTV HDTV TiVo Powered PVRs forum as the HR10 is actually the only DirecTV HDTV TiVo Powered PVR.
