Poor Antonella... this is the second week when giving the vote results that Seacrest has tried his darnest to make her pee her pants. I suspect next week it'll happen.
After Leslie found out she was leaving, she just had a look of "i really need to leave; I think left my curling iron on" for her remainder on stage.
What was with Pickler's hair? I liked that short cut she got last year that everybody railed on her about. But this was just a lame Anna Nicole / Kimber / 'I wanna be a porn star' style.

At this point, it's just scattershot. It seems to be accurate about the top choices, but most people know that from watching. But two of the four losers were not in the bottom three of Dialidol. And it allowed that 7 of 10 could be in the bottom three. Too wide a net. However, as the season progresses, it does get scary accurate.

True. It did let us know that Sanjaya and Antonella were safe, though, so the show wasn't really all that exciting when each of them were left hanging.

What was with Pickler's hair? I liked that short cut she got last year that everybody railed on her about. But this was just a lame Anna Nicole / Kimber / 'I wanna be a porn star' style. It's an old (50's/60's) style similar to Marylin Monroe. Anna Nicole copied MM. Dunno who Kimber is but 'I wanna be a porn star' hair styles are currently long and with a body wave, kind of similar to 70's TV stars as seen on shows like Charlie's Angels.
Pickler's hair style is quite popular with the blue hair set and that is pretty much the demographic they are aiming her at within the Country sphere.

That's exactly what I was thinking. She could have easily passed for 30. Looked very much like a country star...

Kinda predictable, I suppose.
I think I got 3 out of 4 right. I missed AJ, and he wasn't the worst singer. Oh well.
So, do we think www.VoteForTheWorst.com really has any pull? I mean how many people go to a semi-unknown web site and then vote for what that site tells them to?
MFruchey
03-02-2007, 12:28 AM
I really feel badly for AJ. He completely did not deserve to go yet. At the same time (and as much as I think he has no business on the show), I also feel bad for Sanjaya. He's got to feel like absolute crap knowing that he's the worst of the bunch and that everyone knows it, yet he's being toted around by the teenybopper set.
Switching gears here:
Am I the only one around not seeing what everyone likes about Haley? I think she sounds like a beauty pageant contestant (big and cheesy) and is nothing special in the looks department. Granted, I'm not coming from a male perspective, but I think many of the other girls are much more attractive. She's not ugly, of course, but, to me, she looks like any other normal girl.

Since Thursdays I record Scrubs right after AI, I couldn't do any padding tonight. It cut off right in the middle of the scatter's (Leslie's) song. Did I miss anything after her song?
Also, I'm very dissapointed in the men vote. The one I hated worst was Sanjaya, and if he didn't get axed, the least they could have done was axe my second worst: Brandon. But majically they both advance. Wow.
I noticed the M.C. was polite and never looked directly at Pickler's cleavage. Though she gave him the chance when she started talking about her shoes. He could have look down at them and taken a gander at her pair on the way down. :D

Dunno who Kimber is...
Kimber is a character from Nip/Tuck (speaking of "enhancement") - and thank you, Jeeters! I KNEW her hair reminded me of someone besides ANS, but I couldn't think of who.
Now, let's not all rush to judge poor lil' Pickle. Perhaps when she was out buying those shoes, she also sprang for a really good push up bra!
I'm really sad A.J. went already. He was one of the maybe only 3 or 4 out of all 12 original guys I even liked enough the first week to not FF midway through. (I also enjoyed Chris Sligh, Blake and ummm... Phil was OK too after a rough start.)
I don't get the Sanjaya appeal. All I can figure are that pre-teen girls think he's cute? He's got that '70s idol (Leif Garrett-esque) hairdo - but even Leif sang better, and that's not saying a whole lot. I know in the past contestants have gotten a lot of votes based on the part of the country they are from (like Jasmine and her Hawaii contingent) making a lot of calls whether or not they are actually the best singer. Could Sanjaya be getting a boost from the large Indian American population? (nearly 2.5 million, according to Wikipedia - and you know they're always right ;) ) Just a thought... I'm trying to find SOME sort of explanation for such a travesty! Although that theory may be blown by the fact that Paul Kim only lasted a week. If the foot nudists of America can't band together to save a weak singer, who can?
LOL on Sundance and his emotional state. EVERY time they showed him, he looked like his dog had just gotten run over by a car or something. Hello! You JUST met these people a few weeks ago - just be glad it's not YOU going! If it were more of a Survivor-esque show, I'd think he was faking the tears so the potential jury members would vote for him because he cried when they left. Or maybe he DID somehow find out that he was the one supported on votefortheworst (even though he was FAR from the worst this week) and was crying because of that.

I think she's far and away the most beautiful girl there. Her voice wasn't the best, her looks are just too good to eliminate her this early. I hope she makes it to the final 12.
I suppose I might sound hypocritical because I think Sanjaya should go based on his abysmal singing. But I don't see how he's really good looking either, but then again I'm a guy, so what do I know?

Ok, I'll admit it...when he said "Haley, you're safe" I said "Haley who?". I didn't even remember her at all and have no idea where she came from. There are quite a few of those among the guys too...all of the ones who sing soprano. Have you noticed that most of the girls sing lower than most of the guys?! What's up with that?

Well, if they're going to screw up this early, AT LEAST keep Alaina in there. She's by far the best eye-candy available, and also an extremely likeable girl. I'm dissapointed. Not because I thought she had any chance to win, but because there were several other girls that have NO chance to win and I have to see THEM instead of Alaina. Oh, well.
On the other end of the Alaina love: Did anyone else think she looked like a 20 years younger Paula Abdul? I did not notice that until tonight. Maybe that explains the crush I had on Abdul during her "Cold Hearted Snake" days. :D
Oh, for the boys, who I couldn't care less about:
Sanjaya sucks. I had AJ as one of the better ones.

Oh, all right. I don't dislike Chris S. so he can be in my "top 6 guys" (heck, there's plenty of room there, lol.). He's got a great personality too, so I won't feel badly about his being on the list.
Actually, I'll go ahead and add Sundance too if he promises to rock out and have as much fun as he did this week each time he performs from now on.

Yeah, I like Sundance. I just can't stick up for "Mustang Sally" as much as for that rendering of "Trouble". I'm going to feel stupid asking this, but whose is the original version of that song? (Guess I could always wiki it.)

I'm glad Sanjaya gets to hang out another week. I don't have the hate for him that most do here.
I'm much more amazed by AJ leaving and not Brandon. I was sure it would be Brandon and possibly Sanjaya since so many don't like him. I was much more amazed by Brandon being safe than Sanjaya.
I think AJ did a real good job on his song this week. I think they are often better once they know they are leaving and the pressure is off.
I still think the ultimate winner is coming from the female side though and I'm predicting Ms. Doolittle or they heavy black girl whose name I can never remember.
MFruchey
03-02-2007, 01:18 AM
I don't hate Sanjaya, but he just isn't getting it right. I liked him enough before Hollywood, but he's picking the wrong songs pretty consistently. "Steppin' Out" is just not a song to pick if you're trying to showcase your vocals. Well-established crooners can easily get away with it, but if you're trying to prove you've got talent, you need to pick a vocally-impressive song. Sanjaya has yet to do so, and, as such, he's proven to be out of his league.
katbug
03-02-2007, 01:37 AM
I don't hate Sanjaya either, just think he's not ready for the competition. I actually didn't mind the song he chose, but he's too young (did I use the age reference? Nooo, I mean stage-presence-wise, not chronologically) and inexperienced. He needs to drop the shy act at the door and really come out of his shell. I think the problem is that he is flashing so many of us back to Michael Jackson with the high, soft-spokeness, then bring in the outfit last week with the hat and it's just too close of a resemblance (though I'm sure he was trying more for a 40s lethario than MJ, lol). I actually loved him during auditions!
I think he's getting the Claymate votes.

BLeonard
03-02-2007, 01:43 AM
I've also noticed they "bury" Sanjaya in the group songs. He has no feature vocals and most of the time his stage placement is practically off camera.
They may be legitimately doing this based on the various contestants perceived talent but between that and the judges criticism I think they are really trying to "kill" him. Perhaps because he IS getting a large vote and they don't want to see him end up winning or almost winning.
I think some of that may work against them though as some voters vote the sympathy vote after the judges trash a contestant.

Is it inconceivable that these people have developed relationships by now? They're away from their families, and I'm sure they spend a lot of their time together. If this were Real World (and thank God it's not), they would have already slept with at least four different housemates, got into a fight at a club at least six times, and passed out drunk more times than anyone can count. Kids and young adults often form fast friendships.

She hasn't won, and she won't. Unfortunately, its also happened in previous seasons where people will put forward contestants who cannot sing either because they are giving them a sympathy vote or because they think they're "attractive," but eventually they go.

Count me among those surprised that A.J. is gone- I thought he would do really well among the pre teen girl demographic. He was cute, happy, non threatening sexually, and could really sing- everything a little girl loves.
I like Chris- both of him (Sligh #1, Richardson #2), then Blake. Phil looks like Nosferatu, and Sundance's chest merkin is icking me out big time.
Girls- I like Gina, Leslie, Stephanie, and Lakisha. I like Melinda too, but her disturbing lack of a neck is all I can (not) see when she is on screen. All the rest of them are totally generic IMO.

Her answer shoulda been "boobs n' food."
She was cute last year, she looked terrible last night. Well, the boobs looked nice. Her hair was awful and yeah, her butt was huge.
Sanjaya, yeah, you should still be in shock for staying.
Oh, and whoever said something about the Brady Bunch's "Silver Platters" really nailed it. I was in a giggling fit in the beginning of the show when the whole group was singing and all I could picture was that.

I don't think the pre teen girl demographic could have supported him. His performances were pretty feminine (not that there's anything wrong with that). He even did the "drunk-girl-wave-your-arms-dance". He was a much better singer than most of the guys, but had no chance of winning.

I still have Gina's performance of "Alone" stuck on my mind (i.e I can hear her singing it).
Alone is a great song. Every year someone on Idol does it and it always kills. Carrie Underwood did it the best though in her season . Gina was so so.
I also have a problem with Melinda "no neck" Dolittle. Where is she hiding it?

OK, let's talk more in depth about gina's crying. Did anyone else notice that gina clearly doesn't like Antonella all that much? Because it was only once antonella was announced as safe that she got really upset. Which means to me she was hoping it would be antonella and when it was one of two other people, she started crying.
In other words, kudos to Gina.

It may not have helped the situation in that it was yet another example of a contestant being kept around for the wrong reasons while other, more talented contestants are sent home. I mean, Leslie wasn't my favorite among the girls and she does have a certain awkwardness about her, but she's definitely a more talented singer than Antonella (who, apparently, is talented in another arena).

That would explain why she went all out with the tears when leslie was off, but she seemed to begin to lose it when antonella was safe. Maybe she knew it was either antonella or leslie from the 3 on stage, since the third was someone who was obviously safe.

I also have a problem with Melinda "no neck" Dolittle. Where is she hiding it?
I used to know a guy who had the same sort of no neck look that Melinda has, and it was because he had to have some sort of back/spine fusing surgery as a kid.
Melinda seems like two completely different people when she is singing and is not. She is confident and all out there when singing, and quiet and bashful when not singing.
The "men" are very disappointing. I swear most of the women have more testosterone than these guys. Can we get a real man singer who doesn't cry and/or sound like he just came out of the Vienna boys choir? You know like a Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin type?
I am glad Antonella is still around. Great eye candy, you know that is the only reason she is still there. She is an awful singer.

Feminine? It goes a bit beyond feminine...
Regardless, I was bugged that he was voted off - while he wouldn't have won the whole thing, there are still 4-5 people that should've left before him. Plus, it cost me 2 points in my AI pool

LOL. American Idol has broken one of the key reality show rules. When a contestant has a baby and they show the contestant saying how much they miss their baby, they have to fly the wife and baby out for the next episode.
Also i'll add this. Why after America has voted for their favorite singers do they take the least favorite one and let them sing AGAIN?
I want to hear an encore of what most people thought was the best singer. They should just show the video montage of the person kicked off and be done with it. Instead of saying "Hey you just lost a national popularity contest, now get out on stage and sing to all of those people, a majority of which would rather hear someone else sing"

Part of the allure of American Idol is the naked cruelty. Making the voted-off person sing again is akin to "dance, monkey, dance."
Of course, they'll say it's about giving the contestant one last time to shine, etc.

I really liked Leslie's voice, but get kinda weirded out by her look combined with her voice. Not sure why...anyone have any guesses? My sister's having the same reaction and we can't figure out why.
I agree about the inhumanity of making them perform one last time before they leave. Not the unfairness to them, but to us, the viewers. Hello? If we didn't vote for them, chances are that we didn't enjoy the performance the first time...why should we have to listen to it again?! If they have to have one last chance to shine, they should pick their best song throughout the competition.

I figured a bunch of teeny-boppers hit redial a bunch, and put in several dozen votes. And obviously a computerized calling system could get through way more than that.
But yeah, if enough people cast 500 votes each, it might change things. Do we know how many total votes are cast each week?

American Idol allows you to vote as many times as you want. I have no idea why - it must appeal to certain parts of the audience to be able to hit redial incessantly.
I think other call-and-vote shows may limit voting to one vote per calling number.

FWIW, if you look at the fine print when the show airs, they reserve the right to disqualify votes that they think are done like this. Hard to say if they really do, but I'd think a phone number that votes 500 times might raise a red flag.

The thing is, whether or not DialIdol actually manages to get through with 500 votes for someone, the way it works to make its predictions is to note how many time a particular number was busy. Every contestant has a different number. While each of those numbers is probably tied to multiple lines (allowing many simultaneous calls) that number is still limited, and *you will get a busy signal* if enough people are calling. What DialIdol does is keep track of the number of busy signals (relative to the number of calls placed, of course) and "translates" that to a ranking. The higher the busy signal ratio, the more people are trying to call that number and, consequently, the more votes eventually being logged.
It is freakishly accurate in predicting the top/bottom 2-4 contestants. By taking a quick peak around 11PM EST I could tell that Sanjaya and Antonella were sticking around (so I was prepared for the bad news on Thursday night;-)

I agree that they should limit the number of calls per number.
When they did "Last Comic Standing", voting was limited to 3 calls per number.
Of course, there are ways of cheating....I called 3 times from my cell phone, 3 times from my wife's cell phone, 3 times from my house, and 3 times from my office.
On a particular voting session, because I have Vonage, I guess they couldn't capture my phone number correctly, and I was able to vote more than 3 times.
But even with the "cheats", it would limit what people could do.
I think they should allow 1/2 the amount of votes as the number in the competition at that point.
10 people in the running...you are allowed to vote 5 times.
8 people...4 times..
etc...
This has gotten out of hand....the contestants are showing shock as to who was eliminated, and even the judges are shocked.
The producers brought this on themselves...they turned it from a singing talent contest to a popularity contest driven by the internet.
Oh well.....in the end, I expect that the best couple of singers will end up in the head to head, and both of them will have a great career in front of them.

Didn't it used to be 50 cents per call? I'm sure of it. This year it's toll-free. Last year it would have been pretty expensive to DialIdol $250 worth of Pickler. I wonder if the reason it's toll free now is that they had implemented something else to throttle the auto-dialers. And, besides, just what percentage actually use DialIdol? Is it statistically significant?

I used DialIdol last year, but haven't set it up this year yet.
It's actually a pretty slick little program. You can give it a list of people to vote for, explicitly, and it will rotate through, voting for them. You can also give it a list of people to "make safe" and it will vote for anybody in that list who is currently in trouble. Or you can give it a list of people to "make unsafe" and it will vote for anybody NOT on that list who is currently in trouble. While it runs, it connects back to the server periodically to report your results (who you voted for, how often you got through, and how often it was busy) as well as get the current approximate ratings, so it knows how to vote for make safe/unsafe.
It is quite easy to cast hundreds of votes in that 2 hour window. Just run it, and forget it.
If they REALLY wanted to screw with the results, they would develop a version that dialed out using freeworlddialup or some other free VOIP service that allows free toll-free numbers. Then you wouldn't even need a phone line AND you could spoof your caller ID information to vote in multiple timezones. I bet freeworlddialup wouldn't like that, though.
