Ha! My husband even asked if she got the fabric for her dress from an old Greg Brady shirt!

Sidetrack: A few years ago, when we were looking for a house (we were interested in older houses), realtor was driving us around....hubby and I kept pointing out "Mike Brady house" when we'd see an obvious 70s style house. Finally, the realtor says, "Wow - I don't know who this Mike Brady is, but he must have really bad taste!" We almost fell out of the car laughing! :D

*sigh* This show is so close to losing me for the first time since it began. None of these singers, men or women, are grabbing my attention. I have yet to see a real star in the making. There are a lot of good singers, but none that really seem like anyone that would reach the top of the charts.

I don't think anyone was horrible tonight, but similarly, no one was amazingly good either. Overall, for the ladies, I'm liking Melinda for the "full package" - she really seems like she's going to be the one that'll be huge after the series, even if it's not exclusively in music.

As for appearance - I think Simon was right, LaKisha's outfit was all wrong for her. Wrong color, wrong fit, wrong everything. With Antonella, it was at least visually interesting... retro, yes, but also a little edgy and modern too. I didn't mind it all that much.

Alaina is the cutest of the bunch. Really sweet and nice personality too it seems. Too bad it's a singing show. But I think she'll last another week on looks alone.

Gina - "Alone" is a great song, but Carrie Underwood sang it a hell of a lot better. This just seemed uninspired to me. Also, Gina gives me a case of deja vu with this show. Not sure why (and it's not because she made it to Hollywood last year).

Alaina was OK with the Dixie Chicks song, but it sounded like the background singers overpowered her.

Lakisha was very very good. He outfit was not great, but I think it was better than last week's.

Melinda was also good, but I can't get that Gilbert Gottfried thing out of my head from last week's thread. Her head is just very distracting.

Antonella. I liked the outfit. The singing, not so much, except for the high falsetto note she hit.

Jordin: Was it her or someone else that the judges said sounded like a cartoon character. If it was her, why did she sing a song from a Disney movie?

Stephenie: I was a fan last week. Not this week. Too many runs.

Leslie: Odd song and odd with the scatting. Blake's scatting the previous night worked much better. But I kind of enjoyed it. I liked everyone dancing around the ice cream analogy like the hot potato it was. Leslie was "vanilla," but even Simon wouldn't dare say the others were chocolate or anything close to or resembling chocolate. They were "raspberry ripple" or something like that.

Haley: I can't even remember it.

Sabrina: She's very good. Why isn't she as memorable as Lakisha or Melinda or even Stephenie? Her singing these two weeks has been at least better than Stephenie's and almost on the level of the other two. And, she's better looking than all three of them.

Gina- I liked her song, but Simon was right, she need to dress more rocker like. That was a pretty red dress on her, but she should have saved it for a slow song.

I totally loved Gina Glocksen's performance of that Heart song. I believe it was my favorite performance of the night. Also, because of the scandal surrounding Antonella, I hope she does *not* get booted. :p

Way to go Simon is right. I could not believe Antonella said "well Simon didn't like Jennifer Hudson either." Honey, you are NO Jennifer Hudson. I believe you're right... I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of Hailey. I agree she's not a good singer. Not horrible, but in the bottom half of these 12 girls, I'd say. But I think she's prettier than any of the other 11, and I like how much she smiled while she was singing. I just wish she could sing better than that.

I'm thinking she should survive the cut this week, but I guess I don't see her as Miss American Idol.

As to the whole jennifer hudson thing... I guess people here like her more than back when she was actually on, because I was not the only person who felt that she deserved to be voted off. Lakisha is in my opinion significantly better than Hudson. Hudson just does not have a smooth voice. When lakisha hits power notes, it is a natural transition. When hudson hits one, it is very jarring.

So I don't think it would have mattered whatsoever if simon had just said she was great. She wasn't great and didn't deserve to stay.

Yeah, I agree with you. I was referring more to the people above who really believe simon's comments had an impact on hudson's survival and how much we would have liked her had we not heard that comment from simon.

My $0.02:

Gina – I was never a big Carrie Underwood fan, but Carrie’s performance of “Alone” was fantastic. Gina’s performance is not even close to being in that league. I haven’t been a Gina fan, and that didn’t change with her performance last night. I thought the backup singer was better than Gina. I think Simon was trying to tell her that her only chance to stick around is to be the edgy rocker chick, which is what he thought she was early on.

Alaina – She is nice to look at, but so boring as a performer. Girlfriend is in big trouble this week.

Lakisha – Really good, but not great like last week. Totally agree with the comments about her outfit.

Melinda – A great singer. Took a song that easily could have been boring and “made it her own.” Too bad for her that she is so odd looking.

Antonella – I was hoping she’d embrace the scandal and do something like “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” or maybe turn “Lick it Up” by Kiss into a slow love ballad. But no, she proved she is either really stupid, delusional, or both by trying to sing a Celine song. I still love her legs, though. At least she had the smarts to show them off a little.

My addition to the discussion of Antonella’s J-Hu comment. Early in the competition during J-Hu’s run on AI, I made fun of her. She had a big voice, but she got this crazy, bug-eyed look when she sang, and she wore weird outfits. (Remember that pink prom dress thing her cousin or someone made for her?) Then, it was like a switch went on and J-Hu just put it all together. Her “Circle of Life” is one of the best – if not the very best – performances ever on AI. She somehow harnessed that powerful voice and was able to use it for good, not evil. Then, naturally, she got the boot right after that. As I recall, Simon was critical of J-Hu early on, but she deserved it, as she was far from perfect, and nowhere near as good as several of the girls this season at this stage of the competition. She was a lot better than Antonella, but that goes without saying. I thought the real tragedy that season was LaToya getting voted off before the finals.

Jordin: Yeah, I’m with the people who thought maybe her brother was dying or something. I wasn’t dazzled by this performance, but still love her potential.

Stephenie: I love the way Beyonce looks, but am not too fond of most of her music. I didn’t know that was a Beyonce song until Randy mentioned it, but that explains why I didn’t like it. I like Steph a lot, though. She’s like a more talented, better looking, less wacked version of Fantasia.

Leslie: If Simon Cowell turns up dead in the LA river, I would make Leslie’s dad the prime suspect. Have you seen the looks he’s given Simon the past couple of weeks after Simon has criticized Leslie? A scary guy. There’s something about the tone of Leslie’s voice that I sorta like, but she doesn’t have the range to compete with the top girls, the scat-singing was awful, Simon is right that she is gawky, whatever she was wearing was really strange, etc., etc. Her time with us will be short.

Haley: If I were a mad scientist, I would transfer Melinda’s singing voice into Haley’s body, and together, Haley and I would rule the world. (And I would pay Leslie’s dad to take care of Haley’s boyfriend.)

Sabrina: I was surprised the judges were only moderately pleased with this performance. Sabrina is really, really good. She’s the most polished performer in the group, which is saying something.

I think this group of girls is the deepest in terms of talent to be on AI so far. There are five girls who are great singers (Lakisha, Melinda, Stephanie, Jordin, and Sabrina). Whoever you think is the worst of the five would still compare very favorably to any past winner of AI.

My guess is that Alaina and Leslie are going home.

To clarify, this happens once the final 12 are chosen. At that point, the show moves from three nights to two, and the men and women perform on the same show, and the person (gender-neutral) with the fewest votes is eliminated the next night.

they do that... but the smart singers will "make it their own"

in other words, they should arrange the song towards their strength. chris daughtry made every song a rock song, and taylor made all his songs bluesy.

if you are really pigeonholed into one unique style of singing(ie crooning), you may not be able to pull it off. think kevin covais, jon stevens

thats why ace wasn't that good, he could only sing boyband songs, and that doesn't carry over well into other genres.

the ones that can't pull it off will be marked for elimination.

What he did was a bit sneakier. He looked for a song in the genre of the week that a rock band had already rearranged and covered, and he did their version of the song instead of the one that was actually in the genre.

Stevie Wonder week, he sang Higher Ground, but he sang the Red Hot Chili Peppers version. Country week, he did "Walk the Line," but he sang Live's version, not Johnny Cash's.
