This might be old news, but it was new to me.
When deleting the Academy Awards broadcast I saw this new item onscreen:

Is this ad new to 8.1? Or was it in 8.0, 7.0 and earlier?

I noticed it too when deleting 24 the other night. Not a welcome change-----Tivo seems to be ever so slowly desensitizing us to advertising. Sigh...

Has this been on the Series 3 (with 8.0 software) all along, or is it new to us with the 8.1 update?

So did you click on it? Just wondering if there was any video associated with it. I haven't gotten ANY video associated with any showcase since getting the Series 3, even though they are showing up fine on my Series 2.

Tivo announced this in November (Press Release from linked post (http://www.tivo.com/cms_static/press_120.html) ).
So, I'd guess this was in 8.1 for the series 2, and thus present in 8.1.1 for series 3. It's also possible the code's been present for a while, but tivo just started selling the space.

I really hope they don't over do it. I'm all for them using advertising but not if it gets in our way. I didn't mind it in the welcome screen and its not too bad in the deletion screen but I think they need to be careful with how far they go with this.

The steps to delete a program are so ingrained that I wasn't really paying attention to the screen when I did it. Thought something was different for the second or two the delete screen was up, but it was gone too fast for my puny brain to register what it was.

There was a video associated with it. I saw it when I just deleted something. It still isn't advertising that's pushed on us. As long as we have a choice to watch it, it's OK with me. It's when they make it so you have to view it before deleting something that would frustrate me. Right now, the way it's implemented, is perfectly fine with me.

I had already hit UP/Delete when my brain caught it. I went to Recently Deleted folder, undeleted it, and tried redeleting it. The ad was still there (it survived a delete!) so I clicked it just to see. Not much to see . . .

+1. I look at it like a Lotto. I don't have to donate my money, but if others want to help keep my taxes lower, by all means try your luck. (def of Lotto: tax on math-deficient people)

I agree, it still takes the same number of clicks to do what I have been doing all along. If this helps Tivo out, more power to 'em. As someone else stated, as long as they are careful with what they add, I'll be happy.

Yeah, it brought up the same kind of screen you'd see if you'd selected a "Gold Star" from TiVo Central. Looks like there was video associated with it (and I've gotten other ad-video before, like "MC Lars") but I didn't play this particular batch.

I guess the idea is to make sure that even the people who never visit Tivo Central see the yellow stars?
I hate it.

So "Discovery's Planet Earth Sneak Preview" was not the default choice? You didn't have to change your well-trained thumb actions at the end of the show?
I'm not exactly sure why "Planet Earth" would be a targeted ad for viewers of the Oscars. Wouldn't that be better for a NASCAR race or something? :p

It was not the default. In fact, my instinct trigger-finger was faster than my eye... I had to UNDELETE to bring the screen back, in order to see what it was that I thought I saw.

Heh, that's what my sig has said for a long time now, so far no one's taken me up on the offer. ;)

LOL... Payola on TCF!
Now, let's get down to brass tacks. The age of my user account age and enormous postcount means my sig is bit more visible... so please understand that my sig advertising rate is a bit higher.
A dime instead of a nickel.
