The script was very effective, having a great affect on my funny bone!
I was roaring in the parking lot scene with Barney and Ted, and again at the end when they tried to push the car but it was up on blocks. Good stuff!
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot:
"And I would walk 500 hundred miles ..."

I didn't like this episode too much and I felt that it was surprising that they aired it at all. I'm not normally one to complain about this sort of thing - I didn't mind the emmy sketch spoofing lost, for example - but it felt really tacky to have a plot line about people getting stuck in the snow and believe themselves to be dying, etc. Obviously they weren't lampooning the Kim storyline but it felt really rude to me nonetheless.
Begin the argument... now!!!

Er... who the heck is Kim?
Great episode. My wife and I were both rolling on the floor at Ted and Marshall singing in the car... "I hate this song" "it's OK, it comes back around." "What does?" "da-da-dat-da DA-DA-DAT-DA..."

I liked it. That song was in my head all night after watching and is back now. I like the layers they are adding to Barney, the way he is normally so confident, yet was brought to tears drviing 5 miles an hour and grazing a bush.

James Kim, the guy whose story was in headlines all over the country a few months back. Family got stuck in snow, he left the car after about a week to try to find help, died due to exposure, family was saved due to cell phone tower triangulation.

If writers had to be sensitive to everything that goes on in the news and the world - there would be no storylines left.
While the James Kim story was tragic, I didn't for once think about that while watching the show.

I really enjoyed this episode - especially the flashbacks with how Marshall inherited the car from his brothers. I cracked up when he was getting the coffee and the guy at the drive-thru commented that there were no lids or trays because "two tall guys just came through and took them all." And then when the brothers surprised Marshall, and the coffee went flying...well, it was predictable. But I still found it hilarious, nonetheless.

"Where's Waldo Hitchhiker" That was pretty funny.
I also liked the pretentious young Ted, "My parents live in Ohio; I live in the moment."
I didn't even think about the James Kim incident during the stuck car scene. If the episode was released over Christmas, I'd agree that it would've been inappropriate. This kind of storyline is common, so I don't think all the tragic true stories force comedies to avoid it from now on. Even now that I am thinking about the Kim family, this storyline seems fine to me.

Why are you trying to antagonize people by trying to get them to argue with you? I'm sorry that no one is taking your bait, so maybe it is time to drop it? Where are these "people" who are upset? I think you are the only one. And, it actually was pretty funny, especially when Ted asked Marshall if he was still thinking about Lily, and then asked him to stop. :D

That's not to say I wasn't annoyed by one thing: The opening scene with Ted and Marshall getting ready to witness the arrival of 200,000 miles only to have the car die 7/10ths of a mile short, with not only their car coming to a complete stop but all other motion behind them at a complete standstill as well.

Yeah, obviously I am so amazingly observant that no other human beings except those suffering potential PTSD would notice a connection between a show where someone gets stuck in the snow and worries they may die and a news story where someone got stuck in the snow and died. What a strange leap of logic. Clearly no one else on planet earth would make such a connection. Especially not the loonies who went nuts over the conan o'brien emmy sketch.

However, I didn't think the scene was insensitive to the Kim family. It wasn't about them. Even if the writers thought of the scene as a direct result of seeing the coverage of the Kim family's ordeal, they didn't make fun of the Kim family or the situation they found themselves in.

What trap? You obviously have some sort of personal problem with me. I said I thought it was tacky and the only person I egged on was the guy who said, "if writers had to be sensitive there would be no stories left" which is somewhat ridiculous. The rest of my posts were just explaining what the complaint was and noting that I wasn't particularly offended, just found it tacky. You are the only one egging people on by telling me to "drop it" as if you think we are all 8 year olds and you are our mother.
I didn't make a personal attack either, by your logic. I only suggested you get a sense of humor. It's a suggestion, not an attack.

Oh, and count me in on the side who didn't think of James Kim when Ted and Marshall were stuck in the snow storm. I watch sitcoms to get away from reality for half an hour. Tragedy is probably the furthest thing from my mind when I'm watching this show.

All this Kim talk distracted me from actually posting on the show!
I enjoyed this episode tremendously because I also had a Fiero back when 100 miles was popular so I could completely relate. Man I loved that car. It was a poor man's sports car and I was poor as dirt. This episode brought back some great memories of my last single days.
Barney's driving had me rolling. "We're gonna die!!" as he's creeping along. Ted's reactions next to him. Loved the overhead shots as well. Legendary!
On a side note, what's with all the sitcoms and their flashbacks? Seems to be an epidemic here!

I was trying to remember last night and I really have no idea. It had to at least had 100K on it but I really can't remember. It was a great car, though. Only had issues with the headlights. Half the time my car was winking. The other half, both were stuck up.

I actually giggled when that happened. You could totally see it coming, but it was still executed well.
I liked this ep quite a bit. It was a bit up and down, but when it was up (the coffeee scene, pretentious Ted, Mullet Marshall, the fake wino vomit), it was really up. They've been relying the flashback a lot lately, but the more I think about it, the more I'm okay with that. When you have a group of friends who have as much history together as these do (Ted, Marshall, and Lily have known each for at least 7 years, and maybe longer, and they all seem to have known Barney for a fairly long time), you spend a lot of time reliving classic stories. I know whenever my I get together with either of the two guys I call my "best" friends (one I've known for 8 years, and one that I've known for 16 years), we spend a lot of time slapping each other on the shoulder and saying, "Hey, remember that one time when I...." and things like that. It's what you do when you have a shared history.
As for the stranded in the snow bit - I admit, I did think of the Kim tragedy for a split second. I was tremendously affected by that story when it happened (which was only a few short months ago), and when they showed Marshall and Ted in the snow it was the first thing I thought of. But then I mentally slapped myself for taking a sitcom too seriously, and proceeded to enjoy the show.
In fact, they could have made that scene better by, instead of having Ted ask Marshall if he was think of Lily, and then to please stop, changing the dialogue to this:
Ted: Marshall, where are your hands?
Marshall (sleepily, looking dreamily blissful): Between these two pillows.
Ted (looking panicked): Those aren't pillows!!

Maybe that's the problem, I didn't really enjoy this episode much so the only thing noteworthy for me was the parallel. Well, that, and the fact that I got hungry when robin was saying random thai food words. Perhaps it's unfair, but I keep comparing it to last week's which had me laughing for days at a couple of things... mostly the slap bet.

Saw that as well - Was expecting the car (Hummer, perhaps) to be on their bumper honking and (perhaps) pushing the car to the shop.
Also - now that I think of it... unless the car was on a flatbed, wouldn't it had still continue to record the mileage as it was being towed to the shop?

If you think about it, the whole show is one massive flashback. The basic premise is Ted telling his two kids on the sofa about how he met their mother... ;)
I thought the episode was funny, but not ROFL funny.

I was roaring in the parking lot scene with Barney and Ted, and again at the end when they tried to push the car but it was up on blocks. Good stuff!
I predicted long before they did it that "they'd push it to get it to 200K".. but didn't predict that it'd be on blocks.. (I thought at first they were just too weak.)
Though I was watching this on the treadmill, and was laughing so hard at Ted's fake "oh my God" horrified reaction during the 1mph "crash" that I had to stop the treadmill, twice..
I also had to back up after zoning out a bit after the affect/effect thing was mentioned. (That's one of the ones that bugs me all of the time, along with it's/its, their/they're/there, weather/whether, and a few others. How people can grow up and be *reasonably* intelligent and not be able to use words properly amazes me.)

This show is too funny for people who don't find it funny. :)
Relating this show to the James Kim incident is way off.

Slight nitpick..
Didn't cassingles have at least 2 songs on them? (The wikipedia entry for cassingle shows a picture of a Tori Amos cassingle with 2 songs on it..)
Plus, wouldn't the tape player need to be an autoreverse one to keep playing forever?
Yes, trying to inject reality into a sitcom..

Maybe the tape deck has APC with repeat!!!!
Okay, okay, the Delco radios in Fieros never had that, but still... :)

It was probably "regular" coffee since he didn't have to go to the hospital with third degree burns. So that would rule out mcdonalds, starbucks, and burger king, who all like to serve their coffee at 190 degrees or so. Too bad, it would have been a better story if he'd needed skin grafts. Way to stay topical with the misconception of a 13 year old news item, though. You should write for family guy. Maybe next time you can work in some short-lived cartoons from the early 90's too. Or maybe reference that st bernard thing they always use in looney tunes. That's pretty current.

No, the only cassingle I ever bought (I won't say its name to avoid incriminating myself) had the same song on both sides (although it possibly had a dance mix on the B side), so it would play endlessly if given the chance.
From what my great grand kids told me, some tape players could start playing the reverse side from the beginning, when you got to the end of the first side, so that's probably it.

I suggest you spend those 13 years learning the difference between tacky and offensive.
Not sure what you mean by "sensitivity you feel" either. It didn't make me emotional or offended. I merely made an observation. Shared by others, who then decided it wasn't a big issue. I don't think it was a big issue, but thought it was a relevant observation that the show was not funny and the only noteworthy thing for me was a tacky story element that seemed unnecessary.
Hopefully that clears it up. Probably not. Please, go ahead with the brainless zombie "I'm offended by shirts because my dad died in one" type joke you have been thinking up for the last several hours.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Pulp Fiction homage when Lily and Robin went in the Fiero to pick up the Thai food.
(perhaps I'm paraphrasing)
"We need to soak up all the little pools of Thai food that have collected."
:D
I was laughing my ass off for the entire episode. This was a really strong and very funny episode, I thought.

As far as the cassette goes. I was actually saying to my wife , hey, it would not play the same song, ther ewere at least 10 songs on an album. Then at teh end, they busted out the cassingle reference. :D

Yes, trying to inject reality into a sitcom..Unless someone made a cassingle that worked like an old answering machine greeting tape. A short tape where the two ends connected to make a loop. (typically with some additional S bends thrown in to lengthen the total path length).

We were howling when the car was parked 15 feet from the hotel in the snowstorm. Very predictable but still hilarious. This show is unique in that even though I sometimes see the setup from a mile away, the punchline still kills me. Very well executed.

Kind of like how 3 weeks in the snow killed James Kim? ...too soon?
See, that's a rude and insensitive joke. Showing people trapped in a car during a snowstorm is a plot device used at least once a year on every soap opera since the beginning of time.
And why is making a joke about death any different than making a fart joke? They're both natural occurences that happen every day.

Has no one mentioned the return of the slap bet?!? In the tag, Marshall slaps Barney in his robot costume, turns to the gang and says "Two."
I know several people here were complaining that it seemed to have been forgtten. Apparently it was forgotten by Barney.

Your joke was funnier than the entire car scene. If they had actually made it funny instead of obvious and really, really predictable I may not have even posted my complaint. Instead it was unfunny and predictable, much like the entire episode compared to last week's, leaving me with only an impression of tasty thai food and bizzarely poorly-timed lame jokes.

Count me among those disappointed with this episode (not 'cuz of the news comparison, as I hadn't even heard about it). I don't know if it just wasn't funny or if I have just come to expect it to be a laugh riot, so anything slightly less than that is disappointing.
I LOVE this show since discovering it a couple of months ago and have never been disappointed with an episode yet, until this one. Which is also too bad since it's also the first time my hubby has sat down to watch it with me. I just knew he'd love it, but then it fell flat.
I hope next week's is back to its regular caliber. ;0)

I think the show was insensative to anyone who:
1) Had an older brother pick on a younger brother
2) Those folks who sued McDonalds for having hot coffee spilled on them
3) People who's cars ever died on them in the middle of the street
and on and on. I am sure you can find something in ANY show that is probably offensive, intentionally or unintentionally, to someone.

Fieros did not have a back seat. They actually indicated that in the flashbacks: Hitchhiker Waldo was squeezed between them near the gearshift.
I didn't even know who James Kim was until I read this thread. I'm offended by being forced to learn about it.
The previous sentence is intended to be read in a sarcastic New Yorker tone.

Not taking it that seriously, just saying it is tacky and I'm surprised they aired it since there are going to be people pretty upset about it. The storyline wasn't even remotely funny anyway.
"people" = you
IMHO had they aired it within a couple of weeks of the Kim incident, it would have been insensitive, but just because a tragedy happened doesn't mean any related plots have to be off the table forever.

Great, so a while back we had people assuming that every plot line is a ripoff of Lost and now we have a silly snow story being attributed to a guy who died in the snow.
Guess what, Mr Offended, people die of exposure every year. Kim was not special in that way and no writer or entertainer should be concerned about stories that involve NO ONE DYING in the snow based upon that one story.
I laughed hysterically because it reminded me of a time I lost my way (was still on roads and in no danger) in a mild snowstorm in Illinois, looking for a working phone to get directions from my friend whose house I had overshot. The parking lot they woke up at reminded me exactly of the last place I stopped to try a pay phone that night.
So, when I see someone in a car in the snow, I think of ME not some guy I never met and who has ZERO influence on 99% of the country's population.
Now, be offended, TA. Since you do that so well.
