So I fear my Toshie is about to give up the ghost as so many others have. It's spontaneously rebooted a few times over the last month.

As I recall, others have had luck with imaging a new drive and replacing the drive. Can anyone point me to how to do so?

I'm handy with computers, so I don't forsee an issue as long as I can find a way to image (or get an image) of the drive.

Also, is it still true that the box won't recognize any drive larger than 137GB?

The drive-size issue has been taken care of - download the CD image thungummy from one of the upgrade places websites with the drive unlock component tool included - that unlocks the SDH400's 80GB lock (nothing to do with the LBA 137 GB limitation IIRC)

(yeah, my rockin' awesome vague help wasn't very helpful ... I'll hunt down the links unless someone or you beat me to it ...)

Here ... it's a $5 CD image download (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/product1.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=374&Category_ID=5&page=prod&type=Model&ModelID=69), read the description and refer to the standard upgrade thread for further tips.

Depending on how involved you want to get you might just want to spend an extra $15 and go with DVRUpgrades InstantCake for the Toshiba SDH400, it basically does it all for you! :-)
