View Full Version : Tivo Guide - Changing Days quicker?

Hi all...I am happy to say I just got the Series 3 (still have my 2s too!) and was wondering about something relating to the TIVO Channel Guide.

It seems the fastest way to jump days on the guide (i.e. looking at Sunday and wanting to go to Thursday) is to go to the Guide, hit enter, scroll down, change the date and hit done. Believe it or not my Comcast DVR had a plus day button which made things easier. Is there a faster way to do that?

The fast forward button changes it in half hour increments, thought that jumped days on Series 2 but can't remember.

Thanks much all.

Bill

You are correct in your assesment. I do not know of any buttons that will allow for 1 day forward (or backwards).

When I asked this awhile back this was the only way I found out about. I'm used to ReplayTV which has an easier skip ahead ability.

Sorry about reviving an old thread but is there any way to go forward 24 hours in the guide?

There isn't any shortcut. You need to use the "enter" button and change the day.

Personally I think the TiVo channel guide is virtually useless. I'm from ReplayTV world also.

You are better off modifying your behavior and use the "Find Shows" incremental search.

"Find Shows" is only useful if you already know what you're looking for.

I like to periodically go through prime time on my favorite channels for the next few weeks and see if there's anything interesting I might want to record. For this the channel guide is extremely useful (especially if you use the alternate, non-transparent mode: that's very nice!) But, it really is a drag that you can't switch days more easily. That's one of the only things I miss about my old Motorola DVR I rented from my cable company before I got a THD (that plus the DD output worked better than THD's).

After trying out the online scheduling option, I rarely use the guide on the Tivo for scheduling. It is much better IMO.

I do the same thing, I just switch to my ReplayTV or use a laptop.

TiVo's channel guide is very hard to use for this purpose. They do not seem to be interested in improving it (or at least have it on very low priority) If you bring it up there will be some religious war about how it isn't necessary, would cost to much to implement, etc. etc. Basically same type of stuff used to argue against free space indicator.

Personally I would love to see a more useful channel guide because everyone else in the world works on a channel guide centric model, except TiVo. While that is fine for TiVo users, it is less conducive for users of other DVRs to switch over.

However, I wouldn't hold my breath because the feature has been requested for a very long time.

Dish DVRs use the skip back, and skip forward buttons to move the guide 24 hours in either direction. Tivo should copy that, the current guide on Tivo is probably the most annoying part of Tivo for me.

I do the same thing, and just do Find Programs -> Record by Time or Channel -> Browse by Time or channel depending on which I want to look at.

I do the same thing, I just switch to my ReplayTV or use a laptop.I have a TiVo HD (no ReplayTV or S2) and my computers run Linux, not Windows. As far as I've been able to determine I don't have any viable alternative to the on-screen guide.

Tivo should copy that, the current guide on Tivo is probably the most annoying part of Tivo for me.TiVo is already using the FF/RW buttons (if that's what you mean) for other things in the guide. Still, they could do something.

I do the same thing, and just do Find Programs -> Record by Time or Channel -> Browse by Time or channel depending on which I want to look at.It takes way too long to look if you have to search either one channel at a time, or 30 minutes at a time. I want to look through all the major channels that I watch: the big 4, plus the premium channels (HBO, SHOW, MAX, STARZ, etc.), plus CW, SCIFI, FX, and a random assortment of boutique channels. And, I typically want to see anything on during prime time (8pm to 11pm) for the non-premium channels (admittedly day skipping is not as useful for premium channels where movies might start at any time).

The grid guide is much more useful than the default guide. In the grid guide you can see much more information, including 90 minutes of shows for 8 channels on one screen. My old DVR could only show 5 channels at once, so the TiVo is better in this way. Also, the FF/RW buttons move you 90 minutes at a time, while left/right arrows move you 1 show at a time. Using FF/RW in grid mode you can go 24 hours with 8 clicks, which isn't TOO bad. But I'd still rather be able to do it with one click.
