So . . . wow. I can't wait to see how this pans out with Roy and Jim.
Kevin/Brian's blog entry this week said that there would be reruns for a while until they finish out the season with the last five episodes, so there's plenty of time to wonder what's gonna happen.
Anyway, what did you all think of this week's episode?

I thought this was one of the best ones in awhile. I was ROFL'ing a lot more than usual.

I loved Jim's talking head at the beginning of the episode. Something like "Why don't I want to go to the party? I didn't think I'd need a reason. Well, I don't like talking about paper outside of work . . . or during work"

Dwight: "What's the square footage?"
Michael: "Dwight, that's inappropriate..."
Other guy whose name I can't remember: "About 5000, I thin..."
Michael: "So, what'd you pay for this place?"

Creed: "...I run a fake ID business out of my car..."
Creed would so be that strange old guy in town that all the high school kids rely on and think "is cool."
Creed is cool.
J.J. Abrams did a pretty good job. The "I'm gonna kill Jim Halpert" line was almost worthy of the Lost "sting" at the end of a Lost episode.

I almost p!$$ed myself silly when the kid woke up and Dwight was sitting in the darkness. Too funny. It upset me when Roy got angry like that but I loved his brother jumping in to help tear up the bar.

You knew Pam and Roy getting back together wouldn't last. When Pam mentioned early on in the episode she was going to be more honest, that was the sign it was going to be over.
Toby has really had it bad for Pam for a while. What happened to that girl at the wedding? She was hot. He really does have it bad for her.

I laughed at Kevin trying to hold in a laugh during the cold open when Michael said something that could've been taken the wrong way.
So has Karen really dated any, some, or none of those guys? I couldn't tell if we were supposed to believe that she was joking or not...

I think I laughed out loud the most at this episode out of the others this year. Michael crying was so hilarious, wanting the "tickling and the giggling..." Also was it Kevin who didn't want to talk about his engagement at the bar?
The only thing that bugged me was Roy's outburst of bar-rage, because it didn't really seem to fit in. The whole idea that Pam thought she could get back together with Roy anyways was ridiculous though, so I'm glad it's over. Let's all chant- Jim and Pam! Jim and Pam! Jim and Pam!

I don't know that Roy's outburst was that out of character. We've seen him get angry before (like in the Alliance episode when he pushed Jim because he was a little close to Pam). And this is a huge thing to him, since she admitted that she kissed Jim and had feelings for him right before she called the wedding off.

I agree that Roy blowing up like that was a little out of character for Roy, but not completely. He had been drinking and I'm sure he sees that moment as being what kept him and Pam from getting married. And since he's a blue collar worker, it's kind of the stereotype.
However, when his brother jumped in and started trashing the bar for no reason other than to do it, I about died laughing.

Melora Hardin (Jan) was fantastic in this episode. She makes me understand how Jan could be in this situation, because on paper, Jan should have nothing to do with Michael.
The downside? I have to see Michael Scott in public, and then I'll collapse in on myself like a dying star.
Also, I don't think Roy's temper tantrum was out of character at all. No, we've never seen him that mad, but he's shown a temper before and he was drinking heavily, and this revelation is pretty big. In his eyes, his entire life was ruined because Jim came on to his girl.

One thing I thought was odd for the show, was when they zoomed in on Dwight checking out the banister.
We see him in the background, and it was hilarious! Normally, they would just move on. But they made it a point to zoom in on him, which lessened the joke. To me.
I fell out at the end, when Michael and Jan were talking personal issues in the car, Michael was crying, Jan was apologizing, and then Dwight appears from the back seat.

I don't think Roy's outburst was out of character either. I've known blue collar guys just like him, that get into a fight, or trash something, every single time they go out drinking. Drinking and violence go hand in hand for them. They can't do one without the other.

One of the things I haven't seen anyone touch on yet is how they're handling the Karen/Jim dynamic i.e. their senses of humor. They're making a concerted effort to show us that their comedic sensibilities aren't matches, as evidenced by Jim's look at the camera when he went to go shoot hoops. Couple Karen's continual 'I went out with that guy' comedy at the cocktail party and her sub-par acting in Jim's 'vampire' skits and you can see Jim slowly....very slowly...realizing that she's not on his level, comedy-wise, like Pam is.

Well, if the fact that Roy seems to drag his brother along on his dates with Pam (remember the hockey game story?) wasn't enough evidence that Pam-Roy wasn't ever going to work, I think the bar business seals the deal.
Roy's outburst was freaky, but as others have mentioned it's not out of character - even back in S1 he was overly physical with Jim in the basketball game, and of course the DUI. And you'll note that Pam didn't even seem that surprised.
Speaking of Jim, I wonder if Michael and/or Dwigt will get jealous when he finds out Jim's now all buddy-buddy with the CFO.

I interpreted everything you mentioned 100% differently. She didn't seem to be acting well during the vampire prank but I am not convinced that it was unintentional or that it bothered jim whatsoever. I think this episode she clearly demonstrated that she CAN pull a prank with good acting. And I think jim's look to the camera was one more delighted than you are saying.

The reason it ultimately won't work with Karen is simply that Jim and Pam are 'it', and Karen can't compete with that. Karen's great, beautiful, and funny - but she's not Pam.

I think I sat stunned for a moment that Jan had said that, then I started to die laughing. That joke just gets better and better. I also loved the "dying star" comment because it was just so perfect for the situation. Jan telling Michael "don't cry" and then backpedaling about everything was really funny. They are playing it as Jan thinks Michael is her only hope for a future with kids and a picket fence and she's so desparate for that, she's trying to make it work.
I thought that Karen's "prank" was transparent and I didn't think Jim thought it was very funny. I don't think he was annoyed, but he didn't seem impressed.
I thought Roy's outburst was very in character. We've seen him get hot before and we know he's always been insentivie to Pam's feelings. I got the impression that was the kind of Roy that Pam had seen a few times in the past.

No, I'm pretty sure that's NOT how they are playing it. They are playing it like she has some sort of deep-seeded psychological issue where she feels drawn towards things that are disastrous for her. And her "therapist" told her to embrace it. So that's why she's with michael. Further reinforced in the scene where she wanted to both fire and procreate with michael at the same time.

Credit to the show's quality, or David Denman's ability in the role. Even though, in other sitcoms, you wouldn't like this kind of character ... he's not someone people are prone to dislike.

And I think jim's look to the camera was one more delighted than you are saying.
I'll go in a different direction than both of you: Karen's just fine at pulling pranks, but Jim can't really take being the victim of one. I took his look to be irritated that his girlfriend was making him the butt of the joke. (Has anybody ever pulled a good prank on Jim?)
I think it's a layer of Jim's character that's worth exploring. Up until now, he's been a completely sympathetic character. Maybe it's time for his halo to get tarnished a little.

Well, yes, that's how it started in the episode after they got back from Sandals. But Jan specifically mentioned falling in love, kids and a normalcy as the upside of the relationship. When Michael mentioned the same things, she backpedaled her anger about the evening and started apologizing. I think she's trying to make the relationship work so she ends up with the upside and not as the star collapsing in on itself. I think this episode clearly showed that the relationship (at least from Jan's point of view) has moved beyond just the self-destruction into now being a toss-up between happiness and total annihilation.

I think she's simply trying to make sense of her feelings of attraction for such an obnoxious loser, and saying the "family life" is the upside is basically the only way to make sense of it. I don't know if she even wants it - and I don't know if SHE even knows that. Seems more like a lie she told herself to convince herself that there WAS an upside.

I don't get the feeling that Roy's character would have any remorse over wrecking a bar after Pam said what she said. He probably feels it's a justified reaction.

Well except it was Roy. :)

She and her husband split up because she wanted kids and he didn't, so I think the family life is something she wants. That's why it is so easy for her to get past of Michael's idiocy when he starts talking about the future like he did.

"Yes. It is true. I, Michael Scott, am signing up with an online dating service. Thousands of people have done it, and I am going to do it. I need a username, and... I have a great one. "Little Kid Lover". That way people will know exactly where my priorities are at."

Please use a spoiler tag when sharing things like that, even if they're semi-obvious. It's information not relayed in the show that effects future episodes of the show.
I have no inside knowledge of upcoming 'The Office' plots. But the fact that Rashida is going to be in a pilot for another show for next season is supposed to be spoilerized? It doesn't mean that Jim and Pam are going to be together. Rashida's character could quit Dunder Mifflin but still be dating Jim (Rashida could possibly film some scenes with Jim all at once, that don't take a lot of her time, which could be used throughout the season, for example). If her TV show isn't picked up for next season, she could possibly come back to 'The Office' and be a bigger part of its episodes.
The fact that Rashida is listed as "Guest Starring" is obviously not a spoiler - it's at the beginning of each episode.

I don't know if he was impressed or not, but I don't see how you can say it was transparent. It looked to me that he really didn't realize he was being punked.
Oh, I agree that Jim didn't realize what was happening, I just meant that I found it to be transparent. And not very good, certainly not in Jim's league.

IMO, Roy has been on his absolute best behavior to get back with Pam ("your art was the best art") and in his mind has been bending over backwards to show that he's making an effort. For him to find out that Jim was the cause of the wedding being called off was the last straw. The outburst wasn't all that surprising.

Best behavior? He brought his brother to the art show so they could go out drinking afterwards.

It looks to me like he thinks he's doing stuff he normally wouldn't do, like show up at her art show and hanging out with her work friends... "he thinks" is the operative phrase there. He's not really doing all that much.

I loved the hostess walking into the camera in a mad dash to avoid being left alone with Michael.

My favorite part of this ep. was the way Pam looked at the camera after she turned back to the bar and said "One of these is supposed to be a lite." She looked so proud, like she had really kicked some ass.

I think I sat stunned for a moment that Jan had said that, then I started to die laughing. That joke just gets better and better.
THATS WHAT SHE SAID! :p

Did anyone here catch Rainn Wilson's introductory monologue on SNL?
The cast did spot-on impressions of the characters on The Office. I especially loved when the guy playing Jim looks into the camera and does that one-sided smirk. :)

I thought Dwight kept stealing the show. Hanging on the bannister, knocking the squirrel cage off the chimney, and then popping up from the backseat, during Michael and Jan's fight. Classic Dwight.

Yeah, too bad that was about the only good part of the show. I mean aside from the musical performances, which were great.

At first when they showed Kristen Wiig as Pam, I thought they really had Jenna Fisher making a cameo. It wasn't until they went in closer on the second shot that I realized it wasn't her. They did a really good job.

I thought so too.
I have only watched the opening and the monologue so far, so I can't comment on the rest of the show. I thought the CNN skit was kinda funny.

Darrell Hammond was also good as Wolf Blitzer. I think he's sitting around, looking at all the younger people, and thinking "why the hell am I still on this show?"
He's not as well known as some of his older cast mates, but I haven't seen a single character (including Jesse Jackson) that he hasn't nailed spot on.
