...is it possible to connect my TiVo wirelessly to my Mac Book Pro without usign a home network?

Any suggestions on a good USB network device to use with my TiVo?

Would any of this work if I had an Air Port Extreme?

Ultimately I would like to find the best way to get shows from my TiVo to my MBP if possible not using a home network, but if I have to, what's my best option.

Thanks a bunch.

If you can set up the Airport as a WAP for both the TiVo and your computer, you are good to go.

IF you go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet
you can share your MBP's Internet Connection to Airport. This will set up a Computer-to-Computer network that devices can connect to (and then through the MBP to the Internet).

Combined with a Wireless adapter on your TiVo, you'll get TiVoToGo and your TiVo can connect to the TiVo servers wirelessly. Downside to this -- your MBP will have to be on and connected in order for the TiVo to receive its service updates. Either that or flip it back and forth between Wireless and Phone for updates.

As far as wireless adapters go, I'd recommend the TiVo brand one. You'll get faster file transfers, it's easy to find for purchase, and seems to be the most reliable.

I'd say it'll all be easiest with a Wireless Router (Airport or otherwise) so your MBP will be wireless, your TiVo will be wireless, and they won't have to rely on each other.

TiVos will work with an adhock network, so it is completely possible to connect the TiVo to the Mac Book without actually having a home network.

If you can move the Mac Book somewhere near the TiVo your best bet is to use a wired connection. If you have a dual tuner TiVo, and you Mac book has a built in Ethernet port, then all you need is a crossover cable. Plus one end into each device then set them to have static IP addresses in the same subnet. (i.e. 192.168.0.1 and 19.2.168.0.2) If you have an older TiVo then you can do the same thing, but you'll need a USB->Ethernet adapter.

If you must go wireless then you can do basically the same thing above, but you'll need a USB wireless adapter for the TiVo. The best one to get is the TiVo brand adapter. They're designed specifically for TiVo and offer the best performance and compatibility.
