Ok, did some searching of the forums here, and it seems there are some issues. Some people say the auto transfers don't work, others day they can't make it work at all...... That being said, can you guys summarize the issues I might face getting tivo-to-go to work?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and I'm going to do a full install instead of just upgrading.

Thanks!

I don't install a new OS until Service Pack 1 is out, unless I just purchased a new computer and it came with it, or there is a program that wouldn't run without it - like Halo2 :D

But installing a brand new OS is like buying a S3 and have cable cards installed by a green tech and no one at the headend knows wht's going on...

Or a first year of a new model automobile...

I just installed Tivo2Go on Vista Business edition. I seem to be able to download shows using Tivo2Go. But my Tivo isn't seeing my PC for music/photos/PC transfers.

Going to try installing Tivo2Go in a WinXP VirtualPC and see how that goes. BTW, VirtualPC 2004 is free, but not sure it is compat with Vista. I'm running VPC 2007 beta.

Have you ran the Vista Upgrade advisor on that laptop? A friend installed Vista on an HP laptop yesterday and discovered it didn't support his Nvidia GeForce Go video. (No support for Vista for that chipset yet on their site either).

I am loving Vista though.

Works fine =)

Just right click > run as admin on the setup packages.

Tivo Desktop and Tivonet....I can't say dot because it thinks I'm doing a link -_-

They are both installed on my Vista Business Machine working great. No real issues and I can share Video/Pics/Music between them all.

Just tried installing Tivo.Net. Never thought to do a run-as. doh! I disabled UAC to get it to install.

Had to change http://localhost:9033 to http://127.0.0.1:9033 to get to admin page. Opened ports in the firewall, but still not seeing it on my Tivo. In fact my internet connection went wacky after installing. Rolling back with Acronis as I type to try again...

Oh yea now that you mention it I did disable UAC to get that wacky installer to work lol. Not for the desktop app but for the TivoNet install. I did have to do the 127.0.0.1 as well but I can see my desktop and vice-versa. The service is a bit glitchy right now though, it has a few bugs that make it disappear from time to time, annoying but I have faith he will fix it soon. Just refreshing the service through the admin page works to restore it on Tivo.

The best thing you can do is not to Upgrade. Unless your system is a Screammer with 3 Gig of Ram your machine will be SLOWER then you can imagine.

In Tivo.Net which IP address are you binding to? The standard IPv4? I am seeing a long list, I am guessing it is related to that IPv6 stuff.

Oh no Connect to the one that is like 198.162.1.103 or something that actually resembles an IP address. I'm guessing if you check your log you will have lots of red failures relating to endpoints =) I too fell in that hole at first but soon figured it out with some testing. There should be one that resembles a real IP not all the fe80 stuff.

And to the poster about performance, unless your computer is terribly old the performance is equal to that of XP in 99% of applications...

My Core 2 Duo only has 2GB and it runs very nicely thankyou. ;) But I agree, I don't think I would install Vista on an Inspiron 6000.

My friends similar laptop only had 512MB . He seems happy (even without the video driver working), but he only surfs the web with it. He had Vista Windows Experience Index (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/f59082f4-6385-4a61-ba7e-2de9625a780a1033.mspx) of 1.

Not true in my experience - I upgraded yesterday, my network works much better, everything I've tried to mess with has been pretty easy to figure out. My PC was labeled "MS Visa capable"

I upgraded my HP (with Vista Home Premium) with 1 GB memory and it seems runs as fast as it did before. Did I mention my network runs much more robust? My teenage kids are much happier.

Only two issues I had were that my Video card and audio drivers didn't work with Vista - I knew that going in based on the upgrade advisor so I DL'ed updated drivers ahead of time to be ready. Extra time 5 minutes.

One nice thing is the installation process for me took about 2/3 the time it took to install XP IIRC. Of course, I started out setting up a dual boot system which worked pretty cool but then I realized when I had XP running, my network was slower so I installed Vista all by it's lonely (fresh install on a blank HD - I keep all my data files that matter on external HD's). All in all I spent many hours setting up the dual boot system only to scrap it in the end.

My system is pretty fast. I have a 128 graphics card, and I upgraded to 2gb of RAM. I also have a single core pentium M 2.0 processer, and a 100gb 7200 rpm hard drive. With that being said, do you guys still think I should not upgrade?

Also, is it possible to do one of those partition things where I have both Vista and XP on my hard drive. That way if Vista does not work out I can boot up to xp (which works perfectly)?

Pretty easy to do but does pose some small possibilities of screwing up what you have now.

Here is what I would do in your situation. (Some of this is easier said than done. :o )

Make sure you have some imaging software (I like Acronis). Back up your working XP system to an external drive.

Here is the hard part: Obtain a copy of Windows Vista. I just went to the Vista launch tour (http://www.microsoft.com/business/launch2007/signup/default.mspx) where they were giving out Visa Ultimate Pre-RTM demo discs. Perhaps borrow a friend's disc or bittorrent it. It is not stealing (IMO) if you leave the code blank and enter a purchased activation code at a later date. (Prepare to reinstall though, sometimes upgrade, OEM, VL, etc. discs are not same SKU as others).

Vista allows you to install and leave the activation code blank(!) You can activate up to 30 days later.

Install it, play with it. See if how it runs. If you don't like it, revert back to XP.

Just out of curiosity, is Tivo Desktop 2.4 going to fix these vista issues? If so, I might just wait until it comes out to install vista. I already have vista home premium upgrade btw, I got it for like $86 off ebay.

I haven't heard that it was going to be Vista compatible. But, geez, you would assume so.

You know what's funny though? I still haven't installed Vista.

Unfortunately, it comes with Vista Business which leaves the multimedia part out of it.

Nuh uh :-P

Mine comes with an Ultimate license. The only good thing I got out of my previous employer before being out-sourced.

Mine came with a license to every version of Vista including Ultimate. However I think there are different levels of MSDN, because a friend of mine had one that gave him access to everything including all the newest versions of Office. Mine only gives me access to the OSes and VS2005 Professional.

Yeah my MSDN used to be called Professional. I think the renamed it, can't remember. I get every version of every OS, VS 2005, but no Office products. (The Vista launch tour took are of that though. ;) )

But MSDN is kinda stingy with Vista activations. I only get 1 per SKU. :(

Not like you can't ask for another. I've never had them say no. :)

Do tell. Are you requesting them yourself from the MSDN web page. (It gets greyed out after it issues the fist product key.) Or are you talking about your employer?

I called the support number. I've gotten them to add keys to several things when we were doing large tests that needed 50+ licenses. That's what it's for after all, testing and development.

I bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. It has the Nvidia GeForce Go card and works fine. I also installed Tivo2Go and it worked until I told it not to load at startup. Now when I click to open the tivo desktop it tells me "Transfer Service Not Running".

Growing pains!!

UPDATE!

I partitioned my hardrive into two and installed Vista on one drive so that if it didn't work I could still have my old settings.

The good news is Tivo-to-Go seems to work normally. The auto transfer seems to be the only thing that doesn't work, but I was able to transfer programs.

The bad news is there is a ton of stuff that does not work at all.....peripherals, software, etc.....I think next time I'm going to buy a Mac!

I just installed Vista this evening. It would not allow me to install TiVo Desktop 2.4...said I needed "at least Service Pack 2"...so I just installed 2.3 and it is running fine.

I still can't get DirectShow Dump to load...it says I need to have .NET Framework installed...but which one? It takes you to a page with about 20 versions of it. I installed the most likely one for my system (identified as something like X86 version)...but DSD still says it needs .NET Framework. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Jim

BTW, you may want try WinTivoDecode (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=342174) instead of DSD

It requires .NET 2.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en)

Hey one more update..........

Tivo to go works perfectly with Windows Vista Home Premium. I haven't noticed any difference. The auto-transfer works and not once have I not been able to connect.

Also for you slingbox dudes out there it works too!

I still have my old trusty xp backed up to a different partition of my hard drive b/c there are a few programs that don't work, but hopefully I can delete it in a few months.
