Hello. I'm new to this forum and don't necessarily know all the protocols, but could use some opinionated expertise. Lately my TIVO needs a lot of restarts and I get this part green/part amber light. Has this occurred to anyone else? Is it dying? Thanks for your replies.

The green light means it's on. The amber part normally indicates that it's recieving a command from the remote. Is it on all the time?

I thought amber light meant TiVo was using the phone line?

Hadn't considered that... I haven't used a phone line in so long I forgot that the right hand light could be amber, too. I was talking about an amber portion of the green light (on the left) because the OP described it as part green/part amber.

The right amber light means phone call.
The left one means remote, and blings during startup, indicating when to hit Pause for the kickstart routine.

Thanks to all your repliess!!!! Yes, I've since noticed that when I use the remote the amber light does in fact show under the green; so hyachts and others are probably on it. Did I mention that it stalls and freezes while viewing saved programs. Of course, not...forgot. Hard drive, huh?

Could cerainly be, yes. How old is it? Is the stalling and freezing the behavior that causes you to reboot, or is it doing something else as well?

Right again! Just about on the hour today. In fact, I am visiting the forum each time I'm waiting for the reboot to boot. Ready to give the box the boot by now. Thanks again, hyachts.

Did you check it's temperature you may have a fan thats not working correctly.

I was under the impression that it threw an error message of some sort when it detected high internal temps. Don't quote me on that though. It, of course, wouldn't do that if the sensor were faulty, but then you wouldn't be able to check the temp from the sysinfo screen, either.

Understood. I wasn't suggesting that this wasn't the problem, just that if it was there was some malfunction causing it to be "unaware" of its own condition.

Of course he should verify that the fan is working to rule that out.

Temp feels normal. Here's another iron for the fire, though. I recently placed an atomic clock on top. Isn't it true about how they can interfere with electronics? I've now moved it back across the room and will monitor to see if the problem lessens again. Crazy, I know, but if anyone is interested, I'll post the results of the experiment.
