Qunlock Beware

Chalk up another victim for Series 1 and qunlock. I thought i had read much of the procedures for upgrading series 1 and was knowledgable enough to try it.Problem is I assumed that the hindsdale procedure was most current,its good except for the reference to locked maxtor drives and qunlock.Only after i encountered my locked drive and qunlock locking up my drive did i find out differently.

DO NOT USE QUNLOCK,USE DISKUTIL.
IF YOU USE QUNLOCK IT CAN LOCK YOUR DRIVE COMPLETLY AND PERMANTLY AND YOUR POST SCREEN WILL NOT COMTINUE PAST THAT DRIVE.

Unfourtunatly there are a couple of direction for modification out there that still suggest qunlock,use diskutil instead.
Weaknees or steveconrad are two of the ones that don't reference qunlock.
It would be very helpful if this post was a sticky both in this forum and in series 1 archive.

Do yourself a favor and replace your fried Maxtor drive with a non-Maxtor drive. The whole locking thing is just another pain that you just don't need.

i did.looks like my sony is set up same as yours. Problem i had was unlocking maxtor so i could make a image before upgrading. I did manage to salvage the maxtor drive by replacing drive board and get a image off of it. Now the drive sets in the closet. Was going to make new image of dst update but my upgraded drive has a issue with menu where the background screen keeps rerunning a clip. Doesnt affect funtionality,just annoying. I reinstalled original drive but drive is locked again and disk util says its unlocked. Am afraid to use qunlock again and try to copy image.
