OK, I am moving to Verizon FIOS but I am heart broken about sticking my 3dtivos and HD Dtivo in a closet.. Since they are Linux boxes, Anyone successfully found alternate uses for it.. I know it is essentially useless as a dvr without the dtv service...

How 'bout ..
A file server?
An asterisk(trixbox) server?
wow it would be great if someone got MAME to work on it....

Any ideas? I did think of a media receiver using Tivoserver.. but looking fo any practical projects...

alternate usesUnsubscribed DTivos make servicable video servers/plaback units. Personally I don't like to store video on the DTivo itself, so for me it's pretty much strictly a playback device, with the programming on a networked computer's external hard drives.

Maybe not the best, what with hacked XBoxes, the new AppleTV thingie, and of course the Mac mini all maybe better at it than the DTivo (the Mac mini is a superb solution), but since you already own the DTivos the price is right.

I just feel bad putting it in the closet, Just think'n there gotta be something to use if for, but maybe I will just use it as a space occupier in my closet...

I'll give you $25 each for 'em (and buy more than one). I want to stick one in the kitchen and use it as an access point.
