I always record everything in basic quality to save space on my HD. I recently got a Humax 400 so I could start saving some series to DVD. I have noticed that basic quality on my DT is much better than it is on the Humax. To be honest I don't see a whole lot of difference between best and basic on the DT but on the Humax basic is very noticeable, with a great deal of pixilation. Does anyone know the cause of this? I have basic cable and don't use a cable box.
Thanks!

There could be a couple factors.
1. The number of splits in the coax cable could have an effect. Distance and the number of splitters between the junction box and your tivos could be the cause of one getting a better signal than the other.
2. The various model tivos have used different mpeg2 encoding chips and some are better than others.

There is only one four way splitter and the cables are all the same length and type.
#2 makes sense though.

The DT has a much better processor in it.

All the DVD-R models record in DVD standard formats. The Series 2 units without a DVD burner record in formats optomized for recording TV. Basic on the Humax has a lower bitrate than Basic on the S2, Medium on the Humax is closer to the S2 Basic bitrate.
