View Full Version : Freedom of Speech in Tivo Land?

Concerning Tivos Support site, or lack thereof... its so annoying, If someone merely says one tiny thing bad about the system (mind you now, NOT using foul language, or saying anything offensive) but just criticizing the system or tech support procedures in the slightest way, why do they remove the post? How do they improve their performance? Is their marketing that weak that it can't stand a little honesty among its customers. It makes one even less loyal to the brand when treated so improperly. Other companies have the fortitude to leave customer post and fix things properly and address the issues. Is this not America or did Tivo move to a communist country while i sleeping and it was "trying" to record something (before this annoying 2 second delay skip on cable boxes just started and now we can't even use season pass)? Its just an expensive vcr now!

A newspaper can opt to not run an ad if they don't like what you put in it.
TiVo's website belongs to them and they can do what they like.
Sadly, in such situations, freedom of speech doesn't exist.
It IS interesting, if they actually remove any voices of protest, however.

Why can't you use season passes anymore?

TiVo's web site is TiVo's web site. Why should they post critical statements there? If I were them, I wouldn't.
If you feel compelled to say something negative about TiVo, post it here. I've seen lots of critical posts on this forum that were addressed directly by some of the TiVo staff that lurk here. I've had that happen to one critical post I made myself. Seems fair to me.

I was going to post here, but I would have said exactly what CraigHB said.

Did you post again with just the problem itself and get support on TiVo's site?
Would you like some help here fro your problem? If so, could you please calrify it some more so that those who have seen it can help you out.

So you agree with silencing voices of truth that are making legitimate complaints?
If TiVo has such good service, why not allow people to complain, so the complaint can be addressed and the resolution also made public?

I think because its purely a help forum and keeping everything on topic makes the forum more productive. It isn't a generalized TiVo discussion forum like is on this site.

the site at www.tivo.com that the OP was talking about is truly a customer support site tuned very explicitly and specifically to asking troubleshooting questions and delivering answers for those queries. It would be a disservice to the TiVo customers and volunteer staff that help support it to have to wade through complaints to get to the actual problem and resolution data. It is one of those all or nothing type policies and the nothing but technical help policy is a very good one for the customers. The whole silencing protest stuff is just not appicable in this situation

Sadly, in such situations, freedom of speech doesn't exist. The constitutional right to freedom of speech in the U.S. only applies to actions by the government, not to private companies and individuals.
Any online forum has rules that the owner of the forum has chosen to have. For example, on this forum we can criticize Tivo, Inc., but we cannot talk about TiVo stock prices or how to steal TiVo service.

So you're basically saying that on a site that has the theme "Tell us your problem and we'll help you" they don't want people complaining about their problem?

Charles? Would you please explain to me how what you say above contradicts what I said?

It seems very common for people to yell Freedom of speech when the "offender" is a private party.

come on - you know it is simply a technical support forum and trying to claim any censorship is just blowing smoke. Have fun with that.

If you have a problem, post there, and it'll get solved.
If you have a complaint that's not related to a problem, don't post there.
The rules of what is and isn't allowed on the TiVo support forum are very explicit. If you have complaints or rants or issues, please post here instead.

Can anyone figure out what he is talking about? If the complaint was worded this well on the TiVo site I would have deleted it as well.

I've bitched over and over on this site about TiVo shortcomings, especially S3 problems. I've never had a post deleted nor have I ever been warned about it by a moderator. That's as opposed to a different forum where apparently there are more lenient rules for "Gold Club" members.
TiVo Community is great. Why waste your time bitching on tivo.com forums, especially if you know you're not welcome? This place is like psychotherapy but without the doctor's bills! :)
