Supposedly from a CSR, so has a reliability rating of about .0000002%. Does match up with the timeframe of the Lifetime Transfer promo ending.

Yeah, and what's "significantly"? The article doesn't say....

True. Once could say that the deals lately for ~$630 are a significant reduction from $800. I wouldn't, but some might.

~$500 would be significant to me.

$500 would be a nice drop to me as well. A $499 price tag would prob. flip a lot of people on the fence.

I heard the sky is falling soon as well. I got this from fortuneteller.com.

Hey....It's just as reliable! :D

It must be true, because I got the same information from chicken little. :)

I would expect MONSTER discounts/rebates if SDV starts getting very aggressively rolled out by the cable companies.

Which it won't anytime soon.

I wish that I could agree, but the Comcast SDV thread is starting to make me nervous... :(

Oh well, there is always basic cable+OTA or FIOS!!!

Yah, once Verizon gets to our neighborhood.

Someday. I would try it out but its not in my area yet. Will prob. go TW cable first then FIOS if SDV gets out of hand.

I've heard from two different sources (none work for TiVo) in the last 24 hours that their could be significant price drops in the near future, in fact it's past due. Just rumor for now in my book, but surprising to come from two places at the same time with a similar figure (500ish).

Well I did pay $519 via Dell :)

Why not?

In other news, Aaardvarks to consume larges quantities of ants.

Of course the price is going to drop. Sometime. And it certainly will after the perceiveddefinite value addition offer of Lifetime Transfer comes to an end. Finally.

It doesn't take a genius to caim that, leave alone a CS rep ;)

Getting the price into the $500 range would snag a lot of people

I would think a big drop is 25%. That would take the price to $600 retail which would be a reasonable price drop. That measn the street price could be $450 to $500. Either way it doesn't matter to me since I already have three S3 boxes, I don't plan on getting a fourth unless MRV is not implemented.

Unfortunately the deal he wrote about only occurred for about 48 hours from Dell *just* prior to Christmas. A bunch of people jumped at the $500-$550 price.

In TiVo's history, every new product has been priced high at the launch, followed by a significant drop. Didn't the Series 2 debut at ~$700? I forget. If you've ever purchased a PC, you know that price drops have always been the case. Early adopters always pay a premium because they wwant the latest and greatest sooner. In 1988, I bought a Mac SE, 20 MB HD for $2000 and today I could not get someone to take it. TiVo, from a hardware and software perspective, is more like a PC than a CE device when it comes to pricing. Predicting a price drop is like predicting that the sun will come up.

Plus, there are a hundred threads on this board discussing how the CSRs at TiVo don't know squat. Way to go Gizmodo! Nothing like publishing content like that to make people treat blggers like serious journalists.

Like the one where the CSR said that there were no wireless devices available for the S3? Or the one where the CSR said the current software for the S3 was 8.1? Or the one that said 8.1 would be released in the next "two or three weeks" (yeah, I know everybody says that). :)

You obviously haven't asked around enough ;-}

I would, but I've got so much "vintage" stuff laying around already... :b

any updated rumor bits...

I'm waiting for $500, or MRV, or Tivo to get M-card approved. Hopefully one (or all three!) happen before baseball season starts...

Still $749 at Costco.
