Hello,

If anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it. I have a minor dilema regarding my audio splitting from hdmi components.

1st off I have a HD DVR set top box, Upconverting DVD player & will shortly pick up a Playstation 3. I want to utilize the highest quality possible by using the HDMI cable hookup. Unfortunately I have an older TV with only 1 DVI input with the coax left & right audio. So I bought a octava switch (http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI%20switch%204port_toslink.htm) that is on the way. Now I can successfully split all of my components into the TV as well as my surround sound receiver.

OK, I know this sounds stupid, but aside from having audio through the surround sound receiver I want to be able to have the receiver off, and just watch with the TV speakers.

I'd prefer not to have to add another generic push button switch into the mix just to run the audio coax red & whites too. Would it be ok if I were to run a couple "Y" Adapters and split the signal that way? Is there anything wrong with that or would the volume be lower or could anything weird possibly result?

Also, if anyone has any better suggestions I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks

You can split the analog audio using a Y adapter. It will slightly attenuate the signal but I doubt if you will notice any adverse effect. I have done this before with good results. The preferred way to do it would be with a distribution amplifier.

You should be aware that running only the red and white RCA cables into your receiver will not give you 5.1 surround. You need either Optical or digital Coax for that.

cool thanks hiker, ya I have used 1 "Y" Adapter before to split the signal once. I didn't notice any difference. do you know if anyone makes a 3:1 adapter, as apposed to the 2:1 "Y" Adapter? Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to use 2 "Y" adapters on the red & 2 on the white.

Also, jjarmoc, thanks for your input. But that's what I got the hdmi switcher for. It also will switch up digital coax or TOSlink cables for me. It's just that my wife and I didn't always want to have to watch stuff with the surround sound on.

Thanks again
