This thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=339293) discusses the issue for the HD DirecTiVo... that unit was restricted from doing so, and folks suggested a software hack (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=298233&highlight=hdmi+component+hack) or component splitters instead.

My question is, does the same restriction apply to the Series 3 TiVo? I've got one now ( :up: ) and am wiring it up to distribute it's output throughout the house. I've got it connected via HDMI in the living room and was hoping for component in the bedroom.

Just taking stock of what I'll need before placing my monoprice.com order today. Thanks for any feedback.

See this thread http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4427145&&#post4427145

Bottom line is that for most digital tier channels, the component is shutdown unless the HDMI is either disconnected or the HDMI monitor is on and watching the show. There are workarounds like using an HDMI switch as an intermediary and using the switch power as a fake-out.

Got it, thanks ah30k. Lots of great info in that thread. Seems like the scenario differs for some folks, depending on their TV and it's "HDMI handshake." I'm going to try it with my Samsung and see what happens.

(Rarely, if ever, will I actually want "simultaneous" output, anyway. Typically I'll turn off TV #1 and continue watching on TV #2.)

I think I'll pick up one of these (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10422&cs_id=1042205&p_id=2899&seq=1&format=2&style=) from monoprice just in case. At $6.50 it's hardly a gamble.

Don't forget about audio. If simultaneous HDMI & Component doesn't work for you and you end up using that component splitter you will need to split your audio as well.

Good point; thanks again.
