I'm thinking about buying an S3. The TIVO site has the following feature listed - Full 1080i output over component or HDMI.

So, does this mean when I plug in the HDMI cable the component output will not send a signal out? I'd like to have the S3 connected to two HDTV sets in different rooms and see HD in either TV. I'll only have one on at a time (or both on at the same time would be nice). I don't to unplug the HDMI cable everytime I turn on the other TV - like I have to do with my HR10-250.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows the answer to this - I've gone through the TIVO site and I can't find the exact answer other than "Full 1080i output over component -OR- HDMI".

It'll output on both simultaneously

However, there might be some restrictions on displaying video recorded via CableCard on both... you might want to see this thread:

So, does this mean when I plug in the HDMI cable the component output will not send a signal out? As you've probably noticed by now, some people are having problems with simultaneously outputting HDMI and component. It appears one reason may be due to the cableCARD restrictions in place by some cable cos. I think in most case the restrictions are in error.

That said, I have two S3 TiVos. I output the HDMI from the first S3 to my Living room and the component to my bedroom. I do the opposite with my second S3. This fits the available inputs I have on my two TV's. I run both simultaneously and I never have to worry about what connections are where. I control three TiVos remotely via a remote control extender. I do hope nothing changes, but that is how it works for me currently.

Thanks for all the info! I am not concerned with analog audio. I undersand that is always output in all cases.

I would start with one S3. So, pl1 - you are saying in your case (for the HD shows you're viewing) you don't have to unplug the HDMI cable to get HDTV component on the other TV whether your first TV is on (displaying an HDTV picture) or off? Do you have 2 cable cards in each S3 and which cable company?

It matters not which TV is plugged in, on or off. Panasonic and Polaroid TV's. Both feed video and sound in full 1080i.

Thanks - sounds good.

Now I just need to decide if I stay with DirecTV & the HR10-250 buying the ConnectGear HSP12 HDMI (1in2out) splitter for $85 or switch to Comcast and buy the S3/s. No matter what I'm sticking with some form of HDTV TIVO. I think TIVO is the best & most reliable DVR out there. My TIVO HR10-250 has always worked great & never missed a recording.

Based on the responses I think this specific TIVo feature listed on the TIVO site is a little misleading because it states, "Full 1080i output over component or HDMI". It should read Full 1080i output over component AND HDMI simultaneously. Since 1080i output is fed when "HDMI and component are plugged in to both TV's simultaneously".
