While I have lived happily with my two HR10-250's after suffering through a couple of HDMI failures. I just went shopping with an in-law and he is getting back into the game with s sweet new Panasonic 60 inch plasma. He is a former D* customer and lives in the sticks so cable is not an option. He wants an HD Tivo unit but it seems the view of this forum is not to go for a used HR10 and go in favor of the HR20, is this the recommendation?
With that said is D* only "leasing" units these days? What about me the HR10 owner, what happens when the new HD channels roll out am I SOL??

I don't know if it's a recommendation, but if you want a DVR and want to receive the MPEG4 channels, it is the only choice. What you need to determine is what, if any, MPEG4 channels are available for the in-law (mostly I think it's HD locals in some areas).
As for you, SOL pretty well sums it up in terms of recording the new channels with the HR10.

And to complete the information, the HR10-250 will receive and record local OTA HD just fine.

Did not know Panasonic had a 60" plasma in it's current offerings.
