Not quite... the stricture is against defeating the copy protection inherent in the .tivo file... he's talking about the reverse.

OP: Have you looked into a solution like pyTivo that'll transcode on the fly?

I never saw the actual post here, but if you're talking about converting from say DivX or MPEG4 formats to a TiVo compatible format then that is perfectly legal and you're free to talk about it here. In fact there are several programs that do this that are regularly talked about. Videroa TiVo Converter is a transcoder which is specifically designed to convert from other formats to TiVo compatible files which can then be trasnfered to the TiVo using TiVo Desktop. There are also programs like pyTiVo and TiVo.net which replace TiVo Desktop and actually transcode to TiVo compatible format on the fly as it's being transfered to the TiVo.
