For all of you who have complained about TiVo's marketing department over the years, today's press release will be good news. If these people can't sell TiVo, nobody can:


TiVo Selects The Kaplan Thaler Group to Lead Advertising Efforts

ALVISO, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO - News), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), today announced that it has selected The Kaplan Thaler Group, Ltd., to serve as the creative resource for its advertising efforts.

"Our desire to invest in marketing to educate consumers about the clearly differentiated feature set of the TiVo service requires us to develop a broader, more sustained national consumer advertising presence in the coming year," said TiVo's Vice President of Consumer Marketing, Katie Ho. "We're excited to partner with The Kaplan Thaler Group, given their strong strategic thinking, fresh ideas and their exceptional ability to capture the essence of our brand."

Financial terms of the agreement are not disclosed.

What do you know about these folks and/or what makes you think they can do any better than what we've seen so far?

(Realizing of course, that I think *anybody* could do better)

I don't know anything about Kaplan Thaler.

I'm not sure they can do any better, but if they try and fail, I don't think TiVo could have done any better than they did over the years. If they succeed brilliantly, then those who blame TiVo's marketing department for the company's mediocre sales history will have some evidence to support their claim (though conditions have changed substantially since the early days, so we'll never really know).

Anyway, these folks are superstars in the Ad Biz, having created the Aflac duck commercials and those wild Herbal Essences ads, among others (http://www.kaplanthaler.com/ourwork/index.php). They claim to be the fastest-growing ad agency in the US.

In any event, it should be entertaining to see what they come up with.
