View Full Version : Using HDMI and composite cables simultaneously

Hello - got a question on my installation that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have a HR10-250 HD Tivo, in which I'm using both the HDMI and composite outputs at the same time (ie, I have the HDMI output running to the main plasma in my house (in the same room as the TiVo) and have the composite cables running to my master bedroom plasma). In this method, I thought I'd be able to watch the same HDTV program in both rooms at the same time. The problem is when my main plasma with HDMI input is on, the one in my master bedroom goes blank. If I turn the main plasma off, my master bedroom display appears!
Does anyone know of a way around this? Maybe a setting on the box to indicate both outputs should be active at all times?
Thanks!!

Composite cables won't give you HD in the bedroom...did you mean component?
When HDMI is active, the components will turn off by design. You can get a component video amp and send component HD to both.

There is a hack for the HR10-250 that, on at least some of them, enables simultaneous component and HDMI output; I'm not sure exactly what the restrictions on it are, and I tried searching but couldn't find terms that brought up the thread. Maybe someone else will be able to point it out.

Mine is the cheapest. :p
It is only a compnent splitter. No HDMI.

Here it is:

I know component is disabled when HDMI is active (I believe it says so in the manual), but are the composite outputs disabled as well?
I haven't tested it yet, but I was thinking about using composite to send a signal to a small B/W monitor that's in the closet with my equipment so I can see what's going on in the main room.

Composite and s-video outputs are only active when the unit is set for 480i; and they do remain active simultaneously with HDMI or component while in 480i.

I use the UP arrow to switch to 480i to send signal to the composite output. UP arrow function is enabled in a menu on the HR10. This restricts me from watching an HD program on the main TV and watching same on the extension TV but it is acceptable because I'm never watching both. Try it, even an HD program looks pretty good at 480i on an HD TV.
I've tested a good hardware solution although expensive. See the AVT-3190 here (http://www.avtoolbox.com/scanconpage.shtml). Uses component input/output but you will not need a distribution amp since there is a pass thru.

$1299 are you kidding? For that price you could have purchased 2 or 3 more HR10-250s and also paid the additional receiver charge for several years.
