Is there an easy/inexpensive way to fix/replace a bad modem in an HR10-250? I wouldn't care about making a call, except I have a new (to me) unit, and I'm trtying to activate it. The sat and OTA tuners work fine, but the DVR functions won't work until it makes a call. Help!

The modem is part of the motherboard and is very hard to fix. It could be a bad capitor filtering the line or it could be a bad chip.

I had a problem with one of my HR10-250s because it was about 25 feet away from a phone jack. Most phone cords are flat cable which works great for a phone but not well for a modem. Once I replaced the flat phone cord with a twisted wire phone cable, it worked.

I've tried different cords (but not twisted wire). The HR10 says that it can't even detect a dial tone. When I was on the phone with D* "advanced tech support" the tech pinged the receiver over the sat to induce a call out. Since we were using the line it would try to call on, we should have heard clicking as the HR-10 tried to get on the line to call. We heard nothing. Rats.

WeaKnees has an external modem kit specifically for this problem. It says its for all TiVos running version 3 or higher, so I assume that also includes the DirecTV models.

It's expensive for just one-time use, but it's cheaper and quicker than sending in the TiVo to get it fixed.

If you feel like hacking the unit, there is a program you can run called "fakecall". I don't know whether it will fake the initial and test calls, but you might be able to get an answer to that at this site:

JonC24, you're a genius! I ordered the WeaKnees modem kit, got and installed it a week later, and it worked like a champ. I now have full functionality with the receiver. I won't leave the modem connected, but will hold on to it for future use (i.e. calls to activate a necessary update, etc.).

Thanks for the heads-up on this solution.

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that it worked. :)
