View Full Version : Too much TV!

I just got a 500gb hard drive upgrade for Christmas and it is already almost full. It's like the more room I have, the more stuff I record just because I can. The problem is I'm recording more in a day than I can watch. I just started getting in to Stargate Atlantis a few months ago on repeats so I started recording SG-1 too and now have over 30 hours of it to watch. Along with repeats of Still Standing (22 eps), the Amazing Race (18 eps) seasons on GSN, and Scrubs (21 eps). And some of the fall shows haven't even restarted yet like Jericho and Lost. There are a bunch of shows I normally wouldn't have bothered with if it wasn't for the larger HD. Anyone else falling in to this trap?

WhiskeyTango:

I know what you are saying my 2 TiVos with 300 gig drives each only have room for few days more recordings and the Dish 510 120 gig is always full. For some shows like 24 or Lost I actually save up a whole years worth of episodes and then watch them in the summer. TiVos/DVRs are a great thing but I they do cause me to watch more TV than I would if it all had to be live TV.

Thanks,

You can never have too much recorded so you can cover the re-run season. I record a few series to make those months of re-runs bearable.

You are watching way too much TV, but there is help. I know this great rehab program that I can tell you about. What you need to do is remove your upgraded drive and send it to Einselen c/o TiVo Anonymous...

I feel even with my 80 hr drive I am watching too much TV. Granted last night I got a late start at about 10:30 or 11, but I was up until 3 in the morning watching shows. If I wasn't so tired and about to pass out I would watch more.

My parents upgraded Tivo (200 GB) is full, but I also recorded and KUID the Bond Movie Marathon on Spike over Thanksgiving so that attributes to the situation. I think it is great though to have such a large drive because like other said in the off season you are entertained. Also you can never complain there is nothing on TV and if you do then you are not recording the right shows.

I definitely agree about covering the rerun season, I managed to basically clear out my old HD over the winter break before installing the new one. I think part of the problem, too, is that I'm a bit of a TV show packrat. I hate to delete anything that I MAY want to watch at some point in the future.

Einselen, you want me to do what? You'll have to pry my peanut remote cramped hands off of it! :D

SG-1 and Scrubs are rerun all the time. I wouldn't worry too much about losing some of those episodes to higher priority passes., because it won't be long before they come on again. Just set them to "keep until space needed", in case your TiVo needs the space.

I have a 160 GB drive, and keep it around 1/3 full, try to watch 4 or 5 hours a day off it.

I dont think of it as having too much to watch... I think of it as having viewing options anytime I want to watch something. It is like having my own personal network showing only the shows I like.

Change your setting to record at best quality! That'll put a dent in it.

My DirecTiVo had 220 hours and I never did fill it up. My new box is stock and I'm sure I'll hit the wall pretty quick on that one. A 750GB disk is probably in my future.

I ran into this sorta prob that the OP did long ago but really just came to realize/rediscover that I'm just because it's on my TiVo doesn't mean I'm obligated to watch it. There's just so much good or at least ok stuff, there's not enough time to watch it all.

I stopped watching Lost because I started mid-season (1), watched some, caught the eps before as a reruns but then it just didn't hold my interest enough to be worth my time. For Stargate SG-1, I started many seasons late and eventually had to filter due to lack of space (delete all eps with <3 stars on gateworld.net), but I too eventually stopped watching it.

I have 26 eps of Wife Swap piled up on my DirecTiVo and I just delete a few eps that look like they're of lesser interest when I'm low on space. When I do watch, most are pure entertainment.

If you don't think you'll ever get to it, just delete it when low in space. If it's a series where the eps are more self contained (no huge story arc/backstory), may as well start selectively deleting.

Don't think of it as watching too much TV... think of it as watching better TV. If you're watching TV, it's because there's something on that you want, rather than being at the mercy of the networks.

It's so nice to watch something "because I want to" instead of "Because there's nothing better on"

I watch TV, but at least they are shows I enjoy instead of channel surfing with nothing I want to watch.

I put my option on Delete if needed, if I want to watch them, I either watch them soon or they will be gone for more shows that I know I will enjoy.

You are watching TV because it is now enjoyable.
