We have now had an HR20-700 since 12/22/06. We also have an HR10-250 and a Standard Def DirecTV TIVO. There are seven people in the house, the HR20 is our primary DVR (for testing purposes and local HD Channel). I could go on and on about things we like and we hate. We have two children in the house who are very vocal and kind of summed it up best. The boy is 17 and the girl is 11.

Our son said "This TIVO knock off sucks. Stupid UI and if I could kill that little miniature picture in the top right I'd have all kinds of space to see channel line-up. Why are the words "DIRECTV" bigger than ". "This stupid thing crashes more than a Windows 95 PC, why is this in our house, it's junk".

Our daughter said "um,, hmm... I feel like our TIVO is ALOT better" and "How come it only took me a day to learn the TIVO when I was 7 but I've been trying to learn this stupid box for more than a month and I'm still confused by how it does things?"

My partner also has said "gee, you'd think DirecTV would have waited until this box was really tested before they forced this on us".

So... this week there was $100 laying on the coffee table. My son, who spent more than a month earning it said "Can we please, please, please get rid of DirecTV and buy a TIVO Series 3?. Here is $100 and I honestly will give $20 a month to help pay for it". His friends were over Sunday and we got a BSOD while they were watching sports.. he was recording a HD sports program and lost his show.

TIVO, if you are listening... we miss you. Sure you're still connected to two of our T.V.'s, but we want you in our living room.

Both children are writing letters to DirecTV (and so am I). We'll send them to the office in Greenwood Village and hope someone takes the time to read them.

LONG LIVE TIVO

P.S. All of you out there thinking about giving in and getting an HR20, DON'T! We wish we never would have.

I hope your children have more success with their letters than I've had with mine. (http://dearchase.com/)

You can say that again. Since the HR10, its all been downhill for DirecTV.

Amen to that. I also belong to DBStalk HR20 forum. There was a customer that was upgrading to an HR20 and I asked him to respond back w/ his honest opinion about the unit. Lets put it this way, he wrote me a 2 page email on how much he hated the unit. The only plus I see in the unit at this time over the HR10 is that it will be able to pull in MPEG4 broadcasts. I know if I ever get one, I will keep my HR10 as a backup to anything that I want to record.

I would also suggest sending a letter to Tivo. I know they have no control as to what DirecTv does as far as equipment goes, but they would be so smart to develop a series three that can be fed from digital boxes or at least get together w/ DirecTv as to allow D*'s access cards to be used on current Series 3 HD unit standalone Tivo's. I myself was looking at getting a Series 3 but they won't work with DirecTv or Dish for that very reason.
